  1. You mean Cy " name the award after me" Young wasn't one of the original 5?

We must be posting at the same time...I don't think anyone's gonna catch Brandon Webb for the NL Cy Young award...

As long as Webb stays on track, I can't imagine anyone catching him. 18-4 is pretty doggone good. I think in his best year he got 18.

He should be able to make it to 23... maybe more.

  2. I was able to get four out of five... guess I'm just not that good of a fan... but I was just guessing because I wasn't sure when the hall opened...

While I was checking I did find out that today 8/18, is Roberto Clemente's birthday... so... happening day Roberto! I had your baseball glove during all of my little league and pony league years...

oh.. and now the stRangers ARE going to move Blalock to first when he comes off the DL and to keep Chris Davis' bat in the lineup he'll move across the field to third...

I bet you knew the name of the fifth one very well anyway...

For others... they are Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson.

I'm going to go with Cy Young, Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner and Rogers Hornsby....

Cy Young got in the second year, according to Sutton and Matt Williams. I'm not sure when Hornsby got in.

  3. my first thought is that it's not the same as Robinson... his number is retired with the NYY isn't it? ...that's enough for me.

I can't imagine the Yankees would allow anyone to wear number 3 anymore... in other words, I figure they must have retired the Babe's number.

For me, to honor Ruth this way might harken us all back to a time when steroids weren't an issue... and for all the lore and legend that surrounds him even now, his role in one of the earlier times when the public needed to be brought back after a big scandal hasn't been talked about.

Changing the subject, an aflac trivia question during the Saturday Dbacks game -- name the first FIVE players elected to the HoF, the first year.

Can you (without looking them up)?

I actually surprised myself by rattling them off without realizing I knew... 3 position players, 2 pitchers... they are all familiar names for lifelong baseball fans.

  4. The one thing I didntr see you mention was to be on a Cardiac Diet. It is a super low fat diet to help keep your heart vessels from blocking up again.

Although you should get some advice from a Dietician, I can make the following suggestions....

Keep each meal to a maxc of 2 grams of saturated fat ( you can read the back of TV dinners for this info)

Drink Fat Free or 1% fat milk ( not whole milk)

Eat "Egg Beaters" ( not whole eggs) they are almost cholesterol free

Use a fat free or almost fat free margarine ( NOT butter)

Steer clear of Bacon, fatty beef, and pork chops ( choose low fat fish or chicken instead, Turkey is also great as a low fat meat)

The main thing is to ask your doctor or a dietician about going on a Cardiac Diet officially. If I could go back in time I would have been on a Cardiac Diet since the age of 15! ( Instead of gorging on McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco Bell ....ahhhh CHEEESE!)

Ok ..... dats it, just a suggestion from a fellow Heart Attack Vet ( HAV?)

Thanks Steveo... I've been getting info from dieticians/nutritionists for a couple of years. Indeed, I already recognize the virtue of your insights on dietary matters...

Indeed, I gave up (most) beef when my brother died about 16 years ago... he was an avid steak lover. His high blood levels of iron contributed to his heart disease. Of course, I stay away from most of that stuff you suggested and do prefer chicken and turkey... use skim milk and egg beaters... etc.

Thanks for your insight. I agree. :) and wish you a long, healthy and prosperous life.

  5. Rocky,

You've done everything right. But you still had a heart attack. Tim Russert spooked everybody because he was doing everything right too. I would suggest you look at what Rejoice posted here and on the weight loss thread. Carbs are killers if you aren't an Olympic champion needing them for endurance and happen to be a high Insulin secreter, IMO.

We'd like to keep you around here for a bit longer Rocky. I REALLY suggest your taking another look at your eating all that pasta and carbs. I know I know.. you can get get lots of experts backing both sides but consider this... you were doing what you were supposed to be doing and it didn't work. Why not give a little consideration to what all beens posted on the weight loss thread? Or not... just a suggestion.

    sudo

On the contrary, Doc... I was doing what I was supposed to be doing and it WORKED.

I had the heart attack (primarily) because of one risk factor that I have NO control over -- family history.

The controllables are responsible for the fact that there was no damage (or minimal at most) to the heart and that I had no chest pain or any other significant symptoms. The fact that I had been working out and then paid attention to the warning signals is -- along with the wonderful doctors and nurses and current medical technology -- is the HOW and WHY I did NOT die.

I would respect your work as a dentist, but it appears you took a lesson from that republican doctor/senator (now no longer in office) that thought he could diagnose Terry Schiavo without examining her. I don't accept your diagnosis, thank you.

Russert didn't heed the warning signs. Russert also lived a high stress life.

I did heed the warning and have forsaken high stress lifestyles (long ago).

and I already had lost 90 lbs...

  6. Wash n Wear, Rocky, glad you are coming through this, Just curious...

Do either of you have a family history of heart disease? I know that is one possible important factor.

    Most definitely.

My dad had bypass surgery when he was my age (53) and then died at 66 from heart disease. I also had a younger brother and sister who have each already passed away having succumbed to heart disease.

That's why I always knew this was inevitable for me. And it's one of the reasons I worked out regularly. That exercise routine having probably been the single most important factor that made this event nearly without either symptoms or actual damage to the heart. But there was no question from the EKG and the enzyme (tropinin) levels that I had a genuine myocardial infarction.

  7. Changing things in the middle of a season? Im not sure how I feel about this. I suppose they're doing it to gear up for the playoffs which always seems to have at the very least one or two controversial plays...

I 'spose its alright for what they are using it for--my real concern is that the genie will be out of the bottle and it will slowly and eventually be used for every call.

I don't know about EVERY call... but I can see it being expanded to cover MORE calls (than just HRs) once they get "comfortable" with it.

  8. Dear Washn'wear and Rocky,

I'm sooo glad that you are both with us.

You're both in my prayers, and PLEASE take care of yourselves too!

thanks Jeff, PurpleDays and everyone else... I am chomping at the bit to get back to the gym!!! I'm hopeful that I'll get the OK on Tuesday... I walked a bunch more today than I had in the last two weeks and felt great!!!

  9. Thanks guys!

Yeah Rocky - I got the pictures...actually watched the whole procedure in the cath lab...I was pretty bad I guess - they wheeled me in on a Sunday morning after i got there Sa PM and called everyone in to o the procedure..

Yeah um lets see - Plavix, coreg, Aspirin (adult version), Lisinipril (sp?), Lipitor....and yeah - O will look for that little case for the nitro pills

yup that list of meds is pretty much the same as mine now... glad you're still here! :)

  10. The reason Hamilton left the game is because his wife just went into labor... so he's out for tomorrow as well... where are his priorities!

I hope he gets to the hospital in time to witness the birth!!!!

Sounds like his priorities are in order... childbirth first, baseball almost first.!!!

  11. Yes - I have joined the stent club. My left coronary artery was blocked We were in Florida and I was supposed to get in touch with gspotters Belle and co. but as the week wore on I got foggier and foggier and more in pain in my chest--like holding your breath past the easy part to where it hurts, but you can't come up for air. We flew home--I thought it was an asthma attack all along...but got home and the inhaler didn't do squat. then had pain radiate (more like a fire) radiate down both arms so Daddyhoundog took me to our own Heart Hospital...amazing place - from walking in the door to being hooked up and tested I think it was 90 seconds. Anyhow my triponin (the enzyme your heart produces when you have any heart damage) levels were elevated confirming the attack.

for you more involved nerdy ones..it was a Non Q wave MI. (garden - just for you)

So anyhow - I am very glad to be alive.

I start rehab Monday - I am on like 5 different drugs and have to keep the nitro pills handy now.

I am 49 - had good BP, only slightly high LDL very good HDL and 50 pts higher on trygicerides. I don't smoke, rarely drink and work out and have been loosing weight....however I have had a lot of stress which I won't go into here. Mostly the point is if it can happen to me ( all my friends are totally shocked - I am the disciplined one haha)---it can happen to anyone.---

Think I am gonna start drinking that 4 oz of wine a day we are "allowed" to drink!!!

I beat you by about two weeks...

I had mine on July 26.

Only my symptoms were very mild and subtle. When the minor chest discomfort didn't go away overnight, I called the VA and they told me to go to the ER right away... like you, I waited barely a minute before they took me back, took blood and did an EKG.

I ALSO don't smoke, rarely drink, do work out regularly (taking a break as ordered by docs, now however) and have lost about 90 pounds over the last 3-4 years. I'm 53. My BP and cholesterol has been under control due to meds...

I spent 4 days in the hospital at the end of July so they could give me a 72 hour course of Integralin (heavy duty blood thinner).

Day before yesterday, I had the first of two stents implanted. I expect to be able to go back to the gym (but not full speed) next week. In a couple of weeks, I will have the second stent installed... I already feel it's easier to catch my breath...

Wash n' wear, I'm so glad you got it taken care of before it was too late!!!

I resolved to not ignore the mild symptoms because of Tim Russert. He was working out regularly. He was doing the right things to control his BP and cholesterol. But he died anyway.

My family history made this situation inevitable for me... I'm very thankful it's all unfolded for me so well... and I'm VERY thankful for the state of medical technology today!!

    .

I start rehab Monday - I am on like 5 different drugs and have to keep the nitro pills handy now.

You can get plastic or metal containers for the nitro pills (at any pharmacy) that you can keep on your key chain... I got a plastic one for 99cents...

And I also have to take plavix, 325mg aspirin and a beta blocker... in addition to the other BP and cholesterol meds I already had been taking...

  12. I don't know... I think he's good, but he's best when he's a complimentary pitcher and we don't have anything for him to compliment... (that's just a guess)

I don't know how he got through waivers either...

I haven't noticed anything any worse than what Youkilis has been putting up there :biglaugh:

...except for maybe Salty's wild throw to second (which is why I wanted Theo to take him rather than Laird)

a passed ball tonight by Salty seemed like a pretty routine fast ball....

btw, rumor has it that one of the players to be named later for Adam Dunn will be Micah Owings... I hope not, however, even though Micah's in AAA right now.

    I'm not missing Johnny Damon.

Whoever makes it to the Series this year, I'm only hoping it's not another 4 and out.

    me too.

  13. Rocky - what can we say?? You were a visionary, my friend.

    Golly!

btw... on the other site, I have before and after pics of my angiograms from yesterday... :)

  14. thats the question for Bob Melvin to answer, hopefully he already had this conversation with the Front Office and they have a plan in place. Dunn can also play first if necessary. I think its a good fit because he has 32 HR's and always a near .400 OBP--from a distance anyway you guys look like you could use some extra pop in that lineup.

Sox just picked up Paul Byrd who's been 4-0 since the allstar break as another starter ...I havent seen him since last year, I'll be looking forward to see if he still has the 1930's style double pump delivery

The answer is -- Dunn will play RF. Dbacks give up significant defense by playing Dunn ANYWHERE. He went 1-3 with a double, 2BB and 2Ks tonight in a 4-2 win (the Big Unit's 294th win).

Dunn came out in the bottom of the 9th in Colorado so Alex Romero (who had been playing RF regularly the last couple of weeks) could provide the defensive edge. At least one of the Rockies' runs would NOT have scored, very likely with Romero in for the rest of the game.

However, Dunn puts some spark in the other Dbacks' bats... so far, so good.

    From me -yesterday at 4:07

I certainly got my wish :)

Are you sure that wasn't a football game? 19-17?

  15. Dunn should be good fit for the Snakes, although he hasnt done much since the all star break

    Its crunch time!

Just HOW might Dunn be a good fit for the Dbacks? We have plenty of outfielders who can easily outplay him defensively. So, who sits?

I'm still skeptical. We'll just have to wait and see.

  16. the nation rules what? what does that mean ?

at the risk of my beating an old dead horse, I get so tired of fans of one team thinking they're better , or they 'rule'

but if it makes you feel better.......

and by all means, don't let me comment stop you from posting and ruling

    Happy B-day Hiway!!!

    bday.gif

  17. well... they "rule" the wildcard race... does that count?

starman, the stRanger bats are replenished it seems... too bad we don't have any pitching to compliment yours this week... then it's back home for a nine game home stand in the 100+ degree heat (it was 'officially' 106 today, 108 in the shade of the back porch)...

I'd say so... 15 runs today?!

Dbacks got off the snide... finally beating the Braves... win 17 for Webb.
