  1. I'll be thinking that Lester's going to stay put :)

Some of the untouchables of last winter ...Ellsbury, Buchholz, ..and maybe atop prospect like Bowden could probably be had if the deal were right. There could be alot of shuffling this winter -- Julio Lugo, Mike Lowell, Coco Crisp---who really knows at this point? I'd love to have Martin ---or Teagarden

Im in no rush but I do expect some "creative movement" from Theo to switch things around.

With Papi aging and hurt a lot of the time and Manny gone--Texiera is also looking better and better.

My christmas list is getting mighty full already--Tex, Martin, Peavy ...or maybe Sheets and Im just getting started

    I better go blackmail Santa

As far as I'm concerned, you're WELCOME to Peavy!

  2. Ooooppppssss..........

Sorry Joe, I got you mixed up with my umpiring hero, Ron Luciano.

:offtopic: geez, Rocky, I've been watching the daily post count. If you keep up this pace, you might even overtake Excie in time. Of course, I suppose you might spool down a little after the elections are over.

Unless we have a repeat of 2000.

I can't imagine catching up to excie...

  3. Runner on first, lefty pitcher goes well into his motion, runner goes, at last possible moment pitcher realizes that the runner is going and throws pickoff to first---To me the pitcher was well on his way homeward with his motion and his extending foot landed well toward home so that he had to throw almost at a 90 degree angle from his body to go to first.

I suppose that there is no real way to adequately describe it verbally--but thats fairly close.

Its a moot point now--I was just curious as I am not that familiar with the rule.

I missed last nights game ( the social life calls..) but did see the replay of the botched strike call ( :biglaugh: ). maybe its just because its October and it stands out more but all through the playoffs the umping has seemed to be inconsistant and questionable. I know that same guy who made the strike signal and then called a ball has had a rough Oct. with at least 4 or 5 completely bizarre moments like that.

Anyway as I said I missed last nights game---Im still thinking Rays in 5 or 6 --although Id love to see a 7th game

That guy is Kerwin Danley, who played college ball (outfield) at San Diego State University with Mark Grace. He was also at first base for game one (and missed the balk call). I think Danley now lives in California, but used to live in the Phoenix area. In the mid-1990s, I went to the same gym he did (at least he did during the off season). My daughter was classmates with the daughter of a gal that Danley dated for a few years.

I never really had much interaction with him... him being a big musclebound athletic type... and I was just going to get exercise...

The late Joe Garagiola once told of an umpire calling the runner "safe" , but signalling "out" . Of course there was an argument, but the ump said, "You heard me call you safe, didn't you? But I gave the "out" sign. And as far as 30 thousand people are concerned, you're out. So you're out."

The rumors of his demise have been greatly exaggerated.

He's alive and well, living in the Phoenix area, has season tickets to the Dbacks and fills in occasionally for Mark Grace when Grace goes on assignment for Fox Sports.

Substituting for Grace in the TV broadcast booth.

I'm suspicious of a 2 year offer to Manny. Everyone knows he's wanting 3 or 4 years, I doubt he'll take the 2-generous as it is.

Based on what I've seen of Dodger management-they're probably hoping he'll take the big 2 year deal, but will

not offer that money any further. Then, if Manny goes elsewhere, they can claim that they did 'their best', while trotting Andruw Jones out again next year.

Manny has made such an impact, and Jones is such a disaster, that for once the loyal Dodger fans may really revolt. Just pay the guy, already.

Otherwise we may be seeing if he looks slim in pinstripes.

The bright side of that kind of deal for the Dodgers and Manny for me is that might make it difficult for the Dodgers to afford enough of a team around Manny to be much better than they were this year.

    Ok

how silly. people are adults aren't they guests or not -- my kid could easily handle the invisible forum

Of course... pawtucket said that it doesn't show up on the main forum page when one is not logged in. But if you already know the URL to get in, you can get in without clicking on a link on the main forum page. Duh... wow, how many days did it take me to figure that out?

  4. generally, the prognosis for pathological narcissism is grim, so I expect he has not changed and will not at any time in the future feel responsible for his sins.

With this insight from Potato, I agree... and will add that I think it's highly unlikely he lurks here.

Given his narcissism (can any of us who knew him doubt that he is pathologically narcissistic?), the need to gaze at oneself in the glory of how one believes one actually is, it's undoubtedly FAR too emotionally dangerous for him to willingly view, let alone acknowledge what others say critically about him.

  5. You might be thinking of Sen. Hayes Gahagan from Maine. I remember TWI actually got in some trouble over that (about the same time frame you are remembering - mid 70's) - to answer both you and ChasUFarley's layer post. Drambuie Vic organized what he called POWOWs (political WOWs). They were sent to Maine to hand out electioneering materials. TWI got in trouble for a) alleged block voting and b) some kind of improper involvement in the national election process. They got in trouble again later in Emporia when the campus was a voting site and all of the tallies were identical - Might have been for the Carter election. Vic never openly endorsed Carter but simply said at a Corps meeting - "I like the guy...he's a Christian." Of course if Vic liked him you voted for him...how subtle...how wayish...

I don't know how much trouble there actually was, but there WAS talk of block voting allegations when the 9th corps was in residence for its first year. That was the year that Nancy Landon Kassebaum was first elected to the US Senate from Kansas. I don't remember what the narrative was, but I do remember we were encouraged to vote for her, but the words spoken about Bob Dole were not so kind. He apparently had some problem with religious freedom, or so it was said. Dole, however, was not standing for reelection that year.

For those who do not recall, Ms. Kassebaum WAS a republican.

  6. Who's watchin?

I cant believe that Victorino just challenged Uptons arm, I suppose being ahead 2 nothing in the first game it may have been a chance to gamble, but Upton has a flaame throwing rocket for an arm and that looper wasnt that deep. The Phils would have still had the bases loaded with a potential big inning but that was snuffed...

We'll see if it matters--It probably wont ---but that was a mistake n my little book.

That was n't the only mistake the Phillies overcame... bottom of the first, Akinora's hit seemed like Hamels should have been able to get to first base for the toss... obviously, Howard wasn't fast enough on his own to beat Akinora. But that DP on the next batter wiped that out...

BUT... it was still a good, close game. I can't imagine the Phils being able to keep the Rays' offense subdued very long.

    Ok

Every time I go down there to see the rhetoric/ name-calling/ character assassination/ etc.,

there's at least one or two *guests* signed in. There were a couple of *guests* there just a minute ago.

How did they get there if you have to be logged in?? Not that it's important or anything. Just curious. :)

    I've wondered the same thing.

  7. yeah... well... enjoy it while you can... we've only had three playoff games PERIOD... in 36 years!

heck... we're excited if we're still "in it" at the end of May! ...but I like the things that El Presidente is doing (and going to do) with the young pitchers now... at least what he says he's gonna do...

maybe we'll see some playoff baseball here sometime... all we need is pitching!

Here's to a 2009 WS featuring Texas vs. Arizona!!!

  8. I hope we're not being obnoxious to the rest of you, but to be on the inside boy o boy this is fun.....Its worth whatever you have to do to get to this place...

I just hope you're emotionally prepared for what now has to be the outside possibility that the Red Sox will lose. :)

  9. and that ladies and gentlemen is a playoff game at Fenway Park. :biglaugh:

I'm absolutely fracking speechless. I dont know what to say....This team just continues to amaze me.

    :dance::dance::dance:

No need to say ANYTHING... at least until the end of game 6! :)

  10. I watch every night (except reruns)... but it doesn't start for more than an hour from now here...

actually, BOTH McSame and Obama spoke at the Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner tonight in NYC and both were VERY funny... on purpose... Rachel Maddow's show on MSNBC carried the footage tonight... might rerun tonight, check your cable listings for MSNBC.

In case anyone is interested in seeing the footage from the Dinner... it looks like MSNBC will be running the Rachel Maddow show again at 3am eastern time/midnight tonight Mountain and Pacific time... if you have tivo/dvr that is.

The footage is in the last 20 minutes of the hour long show.

  11. it's thursday, 10-16 and 11:50 pm......put on cbs for some belly splitters

john mc cain is his guest

  12. "the nation"... don't get me started starman!

like I said... at least your teams played in October...

I think we gotta give it up for a good young team this year though... and it looks to be a pretty good series coming up...

    It surely does!

    Two seriously good teams...

  13. I don't know about you guys... but I think these Rays are pretty good...

...I know that the BoSox are the kings of comeback... but... I'm just sayin'...

I'm kinda getting that idea too...

of course at 1-3 we have them just where we want them :wink2:

Ooooh... now you're sounding like one John Sidney McCain III! :biglaugh:

  14. Well I got my first wish --- a new lineup tonight--

Looks like Playoff Francona wokeup this mornin!

    I like this line up!

    1. J.D. Drew, RF

    2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B

    3. David Ortiz, DH

    4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B

    5. Jason Bay, LF

    6. Mark Kotsay, 1B

    7. Coco Crisp, CF

    8. Kevin Cash, C

    9. Jed Lowrie, SS

Another good article on Francona from ESPN HERE

Knuckleball stayed high, so they let it fly... for 5 runs off of the Wakemeister.

As I type this, the RedSox are now on the board...

... as Yogi said, it ain't over...

  15. The Sox are playing listlessly with way way too many gaping holes and TampaBay is hot and hungry.

    And apparently quite talented.

I was able to make one of the NLDS games in 2001 as well as game 1 of the WS that year.

And having been at game 6 of the NBA finals the year the Bulls beat the Suns, I can tell you it's IMMENSELY more fun when your team wins.
