Why do you, Allan, feel compelled to insist that superstitions of some Bronze Age people, but not others, should be present-day standards for determining what is "worthy of death?"

    Katrina the Tsunami

If anything, I think I was too easy on them. They were blasting FEMA and the U.S. military for not jumping right in and doing what wasn't their responsibility to start with, and stirring up people's emotions with rumor-mongering. I don't know of a single MSM source that reported the facts about how emergency plans were supposed to work, and who was responsible for what portions of the plans. As to all the rumored deaths at the Superdome and Convention Center, all they had to do was to ask, "where are the bodies?" And, as it turns out, there were law enforcement people at both locations that they could have interviewed before reporting what were not so-called eyewitness accounts, but rumors that someone had heard someone else say that someone else had seen something. That's not reporting. It's irresponsible, unprofessional, and neither understandable nor excusable for people who purport to be professional journalists. And, by the way, I'm holding back on what I really think and feel.

    Katrina the Tsunami

Now that the truth about the horrible media coverage of Katrina has begun to come out, it is apparent that rhino was right. If anything, he may have understated how badly the story was covered and how much misinformation was given out. I normally take what I read and hear from the media with several grains of salt, but I got taken, in part, by the despicable, overblown, often apparently made up coverage. No murders in the Superdome. One apparent murder in the convention center. No confirmed rapes in either place. Nowhere close to the number of bodies they indicated were floating around or would be found in houses. Almost everything they reported was overblown or just plain false. The whole bunch of them should be strung up and flogged.

    Welcome

Since the guy in the White House stole the one I'd otherwise use, I figured to just go by LG. I changed my login name to that on the old forums, thinking that would become my screen name here. If you could arrange that, I'd appreciate it.

    Welcome

I like the new place! But.... What you said about the old login name becoming the new screen name didn't happen. I was hoping it would, because I'm getting tired of "Long Gone."
  6. It doesn't go straight from refineries to gas stations, any more than other products go straight from plants to stores. The evacuation went very well, P-mosh's diatribe notwithstanding. You might have heard a newscaster say almost anything. Many of them are idiots. They didn't change the scale for Katrina, and Katrina was not the most powerful hurricane on record. It was about the same as Carla in 1961, which I remember well, and others that I don't have on the top of my head right now.
  7. Most counties have provisions for helping folks still on the road when Rita hits, Lindy. Since you left last night, you should be fine, though. Where are you headed (or possibly have arrived by now)? I grew up in Corpus Christi, too, but it was long before your time. Are your parents from there? They're probably pretty close to my age.
  8. I'm in NE Texas, laleo. Relax! By the time they get up here, these things are no worse than the thunderstorms we get every Spring.
  9. I went through three major hurricanes when I lived on the Texas Gulf coast, laleo. I've also experienced some very strong thunderstorms in the area I am now, including a few with winds strong enough to uproot some trees and break trunks of others. What's left of Rita when it gets to me won't be anything I'm not used to. I don't really need any extra supplies above what I normally have on hand, and wouldn't even if I were on the coast. Even when my stocks are low, I'm always prepared to go at least a week without utilities or access to stores, and I'm always ready to defend myself, should the need arise. Oddly enough, I'd almost like to go ride out another hurricane. They're dangerous, troublesome, and expensive, but I found them exhilarating. I guess I'm just wierd.
  10. Isn't it wierd how they do that every year? Must be some sort of conspiracy.
  11. Happy birthday. PM me with your address and I'll send you a walker. You'll probably need it soon.
  12. I know folks in the Corpus Christi area who were thinking about evacuating, but have now decided to stay. I'd have made the same decision, even according to the projected track yesterday. The current projection has Rita heading a few miles east of me, but I'm about 270 miles inland, so it won't be a big deal when it arrives. Lots of rain on Sunday, and maybe a few branches blown down, but probably not much else.

    Hurricanes and Pets

If you can provide for them yourself, of course there is no reason. Texas is doing its best to help people to evacuate with their pets. But when it comes right down to it, human life comes first. I read a story that was being put forth as a wonderful human survival story. A family stayed in New Orleans because they didn't want to leave their pets. They were trapped in an attic for several days, the grandmother died up there, and the mother was close to committing suicide via an overdose of strong pain medication and was encouraging her daughters to do the same, because she didn't want to die of heat and dehydration in the attic. Her teenaged daughter talked her out of it, and they were eventually rescued. I think it was two of six pets survived. As I read the story, I felt more anger than pleasure about their rescue. The woman who survived sacrificed her mother and her daughters' grandmother for two of six pets. I bet that will haunt them all for the rest of their lives. I'm not advocating abandoning pets at all, but no pet is worth the death of a beloved human being.
  15. Well, oldies, if you're going to use that in Wierwille's defense, then you ought to bring up the reward he STOLE from the workmen he plagiarized (stole from).A fraud and a thief is worthy of his reward, too. In Wierwille's case, scorn is only part of his deserved reward.

    Knocking on My Door

I wouldn't normally post to a thread like this, but a certain smart-aleck comment motivated me. Oldiesman, they were missionaries. They save money ahead of time, or are supported by their families, but they don't work jobs during their missionary service. I'm sure that they're not all without ulterior motives, but many of them sincerely believe that being kind and doing good works to help others, whether or not they will believe the gospel, is service to God and a good witness of His love. I don't believe as they do but, by and large, they're much better witnesses of their faith than the missionaries TWI sent out. I have a lot more respect for people who actually do good for others than for TWIt-wits who mouth off, but really don't give a damn about people. I don't claim to have half the sincerity or goodness of the best of the Mormon missionaries, but when I was a WOW (twice) I spent a lot of time with people who would never in a million years take the class, but who I thought could use a friend. As far as I'm concerned, the best thing I, along with my family, ever did as a WOW was to be a real friend to a lesbian alcoholic, and simply be there for her as a friend through rehab and beyond. We did the same for a drug-addicted prostitute, and a family that divorced because the husband was homosexual. We were friends with all of them, and not a one of them took the class. We also ran some people through the class, but I always felt better about, and thought we came closer to doing right by, the people we befriended and helped, who never took the class.

    Lesbianism

Nobody asked anyone to apologize, Brother Speed. My comments were aimed at Galen and coolchef, anyway. I hadn't even previously noticed your comment. Although it got more words from me, Galen's attempt at humor wasn't the main problem. It was the seemingly obigatory inclusion of murder and rape in many Christians' comments about the purported sinfulness of homosexuality.

How did you find that site, Bob? Maybe you should tell him.

    Lesbianism

Some demeaning comments here. “I am a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.” So you think of yourself as a homosexual female? And you think that such a female acting on her sexual desires with a woman is sin? And you act on your sexual desires with your wife? Then you are terribly confused about your gender, you sin every time you engage in sexual activity with your wife, and you entice her to sin through sexual activity with another woman (you). Unless she thinks of herself as a homosexual man trapped in a woman’s body. Then, maybe both of you are okay, except for your gender confusion, because in your minds, she is a man and you are a woman. How ridiculous! And how clearly it shows your demeaning attitude toward lesbians, even though you’re trying to cover it up. Then there are the posts that implicitly compare homosexuality to murder and rape. Sure must feel good to be so "loving" and "accepting."
  22. I don't believe in a triune God and there wasn't anything trinitarian in what I said. I merely pointed out that what you said was contrary to both the Bible and Wierwille's teachings, which you hold to be scripture. Apparently, at least concerning the points I addressed, some of the "subtle issues" that leaked from your memory were what the Bible says and what Wierwille taught. You raised them as significant issues. It appears that the only thing that suddenly made them "stupid" was your inability to support them from what you hold to be authoritative. Seems a bit like a kid losing a game, then calling it stupid.Oh well. It was fun. Maybe we'll play again sometime.

  24. If the Bible (or for that matter, your professed authority) is true, that’s not only an unwarranted assumption on your part, it’s almost certainly false. According to the Bible and Wierwille, how did “holy men of God” speak? At what age did John the Baptist have spirit? How about David? And, BTW, who was (or is) Jesus? According to both the Bible and Wierwille, among other things, he was and is the Word of God. You’re the one who made a claim based on that one verse. I just pointed out that it doesn’t support your claim. What physical writings existed at that time? How about before that? What qualified Noah? Abraham? Joseph?
