  1. I like most things about XP better than win98. One thing I don't like is the security around network stuff. I'm talking internal network not internet. I have 4 or 5 machines hooked together and none of them have passwords or anything (I like it like that). The problem is occasionally I want to copy a font file or some other thing that's nested in or close to the windows directory from one machine to another. XP makes you jump through hoops to do it. I know the problem is I just don't UNDERSTAND how XP does all this stuff - but I don't want to and with 98 I didn't have to. OK I'm done complaining now.
  2. You might try taking it to CompUSA or someplace that has walk-in service. They can fix things like that for not too much money. They may or may not have to reformat the hard drive. I'd take all my data off just to be sure.
  3. I was not as close to HQ staffers at the time as Sunesis was. My personal opinion is I would be surprised if vpw allowed himself to get voted down on such an important issue as this. But I've been wrong before [just ask my wife]. This is the kind of stuff I'd love to hear from John Lynn and folks who were there, rather than the goofy doctrinal stuff. John, if you're listening throw us unbelievers a bone and share a bit of history please.
  4. Well said, Hope! Enjoy your anniversary.
  5. Good suggestions. That would take care of about 90% of it. However there are some programs that won't work unless they are on the C drive (though they are becoming fewer and fewer). The other problem is that there are settings and preferences and the like that exist on the C: drive in places I don't even know where they are. Plus traveling with a laptop AND an external drive is a bit of a pain. But I appreciate the discussion. thanks for the ideas.
  6. I work at two offices, two homes and I travel. I want to have the same computing software (programs, data, settings etc) at each place. My solution for years has been to work on a laptop that I bring with me and plug into a "real" keyboard, mouse and monitor in my more stable environments. But, since hardware is getting so cheap, and all the stuff I want to transfer lives on a hard drive, I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible to find a hard drive that can move between a laptop and a desk top. I want it to be bootable (so it can be the C: drive). That way I can buy desk top computers at a couple places and only have to carry the laptop when I travel. Anyone know of a solution?

  8. No, it actually was a legitimate police department for a short time. My recollection is that they found an obscure law that was designed to give religious authorities police powers to superivise revival meetings in unincorporated areas. The way farm is not in the town of New Knoxville - it is (or was) on unincorporated land. SO they set up this force and got it legitimatized. My recollection gets hazy here because I wasn't directly involved (but did room with some of the "officers), but I seem to believe that they backed off this official stance after a short while - don't know if the law changed, if they read it wrong, or if they just didn't want to get into ....ing matches with the real authorities. So they turned what they had into Saftey Patrol and kept the guns and the cop cars.
  9. I just downloaded FireFox - It's wonderful. BUT there is a web page with a link on it that if I'm using IE the link opens a form that calculates title insurance. But when I use FireFox it tries to download the exe file. I suspect there's some setting I don't have set right. Can anyone help? Here's the page
  10. I just read where roboform will work with FireFox! I'm about to switch!!! It's non-compatability was what kept me from using Opera. FYI - Roboform www.roboform.com automatically fills in passwords, contact info, even credit card info on web sites. It's very smart and safe. All info is saved on YOUR computer (even a keychain USB disk if you want) you can encrypt and password protect all or individual entries. It doesn't have spyware. I've been using it for years and it's wonderful.
  11. Old joke told while Clinton & Gore were running against Bob Dole. If Clinton wears boxers and Gore wears briefs, what does Bob Dole wear? ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Depends.
  12. I guess I'm an old timer. Got in the way in 1970. Went to all the rock of ages then and visted the farm a few times. I didn't live at there till 1974 or 5 and then only for a year. I came back a few years later for another year. I don't know how things worked in the back offices. I never knew Harry well. But saw him around a lot. My impression of him was that he was not shrewd by any stretch. Probably a competent business man, but hey, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to run the finances for an upholstery business. You just have to be able to add, subtract, negotiate and not be impulsive about overspending. I don't doubt he made some money in his day - maybe not a million but some change to spare. And apparently he didn't care to use it all on himself so he gave it to vic. He seemed like a fuddy duddy old grandpa. Apparently he was a bit of a dirty old man as well. Story was he had a wife that treated him poorly. Got to wonder what was his part in that relationship. One true story. I was in the way corps on leave from college and had to do some reading/writing for school to keep my attendance there so I could go back on my interim year. I needed a book from the local library - the nearest one that had it was in Lima. In residence folk were not allowed to just pop down to Lima on our own so Harry said he'd get it for me. He did. But come to find out, he never checked it out of the library. Just took it. Walked off with it. I got to use it for as long as I wanted. Have to admit to this day I can't remember if I ever returned it. Probably not.
  13. When I was in (1970-86) we weren't taught how to preach. We were taught what to preach (the teachings of our leaders) but not how. I never realized this till now.
  14. Managing a site and hosting a site are not the same thing. If you are your own host, then you're responsible for the computer, it's connection to the internet, balancing the load of hits, doing regular backups, fending off viruses and DOS attacks and keeping down time to a minimum. Unless you love doing that stuff and have experience you're better off buying the service from folks who are set up to do it 24/7. You'll still have to manage the site - by that I mean desing and build the files, pages, video etc that people have access to. And making changes keeping all that stuff up to date. If your site runs a database, you're responsible for designing it, putting data it, keeping it current etc. You'll just "rent" hosting services as a place to put all that stuff. When you rent hosting space, some of the places I mentioned include databases (meaning database engines that you have to build to your likeing) and also have space for downloadable videos etc. You will have to pay more than the minimum if you use a lot of bandwidth (lots of hits with lots of data going out). My understanding of the "dedicated server" bit is this: Without a dedicated server, your files live on a disk drive in your own folders. But there are probably other sites hosted on the same drive on the same computer. (In different folders of course.) With dedicated servers the company rents you your own computer and no one else's stuff is on it. I've never cared about the dedicated server so I may not be right about that. Hope that helps.
  15. Well Refiner, You certainly get points for naming a thread in a way to get a voluminous response. So many I haven't read them all - but read enough to see a pattern that I see repeated often here and saw a lot when I was a follower in the way. That pattern is people have a belief they like. They justify that belief with varying degrees fo logic, scripture etc. When someone asks a question as you did, people jump through all kinds of hoops to come up with an explanation that does not negate their core belief. Sometimes the explanations make sense, sometimes they don't sometimes they border on lunacy. But usually folks don't realize this because to do so would call into question a belief they are comfortable with. My own belief is that the questions are more useful than the answers when it comes to many unproveable aspects of life. And of course I have many explanations to justify that belief. Enjoy!
  16. Obviously none of us can speak for anyone else. Most of us left the way because they expected us to. When I was in there was a range of how strongly way folks followed the perscribed life style. And there was a "pecking order" where those that followed more closely were seen as more spiritual and more likely to be chosen for leadership positions. Since I left (the mid 1980's) I've heard that they have kicked people out for not following the "path". Recently, after the President was kicked out in a sex scandal (that was known about by many but nothing was done till there was a law suit) they are reputed to be "kinder and gentler" about this stuff. Don't know how your date is responding or what pressure is being applied. Keep your eyes and ears open, and go with your gut.
  17. Part of the difference is just price. You can pay anywhere from $12 - $125 for two shirts that are basically identical in important features. Part of the difference is in service (folks at the $12 store may not know much about shirts or even their store - folks at the $125 store will probably give you a glass of wine). Part of the price difference is actual features difference. There are some shirts that have better cloth, better stitching, better buttons, better cut and drape. Often the better ones cost more than the other, but not always. Just like men are taller than women in general but I know a bunch of gals that are taller than me. The trick is knowing what features you want, and how to judge the service. THEN get the best price. I've put up several sites for many companies I own and never gotten a dedicated managed host. I suspect it's over-kill for most needs. I'm happy with a hosting service that costs $10 per monthEZpublishing.com but am looking at moving to one that cost $7 BlueHost.com. I'm going to ditch one that cost $5 per month.1and1.com The reason for all this switching is not the money ($10 per month is not a whole lot different than $5) but the mix of features and how they impliment them is more suited to my liking. Hope that helps.
  18. Hoo Boy! Welcome, Nameless. Good move on the google thing. People who are in the way by choice are committed to it as their whole life. It's not like a religious belief or church activity. It forms the whole basis of who they are, what they do, who they socialize with etc. If the person you are seeing got involved as a young child then perhaps their involvement is not by choice, but by lack of knowing what else to do. Perhaps as they aged they realized getting away from the way would mean cutting themselves off from their family and they chose not to do that. Or perhaps they ARE involved by their own choice and are completely comitted. I would ask how they got involved, and why they stay involved. See how you feel about the answers. Way folks are usually happy to talk about how they got involved. Part of the advice I'd give depends on what you mean by "I am currently dating" and what you want out of the relationship. If the person you are dating is one of many you are currently dating, and if the relationship is on the casual side, I would strongly suspect that this person is being nice to you as an enticement to get you involved. If this is a more serious relationship, the same may be true. It also may be that the person is seeing you as a form of rebellion and possibly a way out for themselves. That is a burden you best learn a lot about before you decide to bear it - we're not talking about something as simple as supporting a person while they make a career change. (As if that is simple.) I would have a conversation about the future of the relationship, how this person feels about your not being a religious person, and what would they feel if you didn't change. And I'd be on the alert for the person not being totally truthful with you - at worst because they are actively trying to decieve you into joining and at best because people in the way don't often know what they really think or feel about anything. In fact they are encouraged only to think what their leaders tell them and to deny any feelings they have to the contrary. FYI - Just to put my comments in perspective, I was invloved in the way for 16 years. I was ordained and a leader. However it was a while ago. From what I've heard, things have gotten much more hard core since then. Best of luck.
  19. What if these were not genuine answers. What if there is no god? what if... The problem is (it seems to me) that people have a belief they are comfortable with about what god does and what prayer is. They keep that belief as long as they can - even if there is no evidence to support it and even when there is evidence to the contrary. We as a species have developed a great ability to see patterns in the world around us. This helps us find food, avoid enemies and find mates. It also helps us evolve belief patterns that may not be justified by the "real world".
  20. In one study most SPAM (and its related evils) came from email addresses that people posted on their own web sites (more than from opt-in lists and on-line purchases). What can you do if you have a site, and want to let people know of your email? Check out this article
  21. Vickles, Sometimes Norton can't fix a problem it identifies, but in my experience it let's you quarantine it - not the same thing but it does keep it from infecting your machine. Norton is anti-VIRUS software. Not all obnoxious computer things are viruses. Pop-ups for example. Also many more problems come through Internet Explorer because so many people use it, it's a target for so many hackers. You might consider another like those that can be found here: http://www.myie2.com/ (I think it uses IE but it blocks some pop-ups) http://www.opera.com/ (highly recommended unless you use roboform) http://www.mozilla.org (never used it but hear good things about it)
  22. Thanks Wayward, The new list is better.
  23. Wayward, If you feel you could spell out the names more completely it would help some of us who have not been around in a while. Also could you tell me what the president's cabinet does? Are they responsible for departments at HQ? Thanks
  24. When I was a young teen ager (before I got in the way) I visited the mormon temple in Salt Lake. I signed the guest book and wrote a comment. A few months later some mormons knocked at my door (I lived across the country in NY) and mentioned verbatim the comment I'd written and asked if I'd like to talk about it. FREAKY ****! I'm amused by the comments on this thread about being nice, and even taking pity on the door to door folks as if they have a right to barge into your life for their own purposes. When you get SPAM in your email, do you write a nice letter back explaining that you are not interested in expanding the size of your genitals or refinancing your mortgage? To me it's the same.
