More pet recalls Thursday

My friend Janice called a few days ago and asked if I had the list of recall...

I did.

I also had a phone number, I called. She knew something was wrong with her cat, well, I called the number and POUNCE was not on their list. I told her it was okay.

Her cat died yesterday.

I feel like crap.

Pounce treats are on it, Old Roy treats, And Purina has pulled some of their wet foods.

Other than the occasional hairball, (my cat and) I (are) am having no trouble with Friskies and 9 Lives canned cat food, and Chef's Blend dry cat food. I'm most thankful for that fact.

And the only table food my cat bugs me about is yogurt. For some reason, he likes yogurt...

Dot - Please send Janice my condolences. That's so sad. But you must know the damage had already been done before she called you. Besides, you gave her the best info you had available.

Anyone who knows you knows your heart and of course you feel bad. But please don't feel guilt. That's not yours.

I feel terrible for Janice.

Dot, I'm going to echo bow, and say how sorry I am for your friend, but I'm hoping you know you sure didn't do anything wrong.

We've been using Natural Balance for a few years now, and I'm real happy with it. We have a 13 year old cat, and a 5 year old dog, and we haven't noticed any problems. The price is reasonable, and we get it at a pet store. They have organic formulas, and in some states you can get raw food, and for dogs they even have vegan food. There's a store locator on there website.

The original recalls concerned wet foods,

so you're safer with dry foods than wet foods.

The ingredient that seems to be on the news, that was affected,

was "wheat gluten."

So, find a package of dry food, and read the ingredients.

No wheat gluten, no tainted ingredients.

Please note that this is free advice, not guaranteed in any way,

and I'm no expert.

we are relying on the COMPANY that made the bad food to tell us which is bad.

Did you look at the link with Euthanized pets in commercial dog food? Or beaks and feathers as chicken parts - they have been killing our pets for years, this time an ingredient got them caught, IMO

Purina said none of theirs was bad now they are pulling some items.

Buy HUMAN grade dog or cat food

Check

Solid Gold

Canidae

For dogs you can take meat bonefree chicken or cooked hamberger the portion is 1/2

to 1/2 cooked rice (I use brown, vet uses white)

To 1/2 cooked vegetable (green beans, green peas, or carrots)

You can put in a little chopped fresh apple or a few blueberries (no apple seeds)

No onions no garlic no chocolate no grapes

I made my own cat food for years. The cats were extremely healthy and disease free and lived to be 16 and 17 years old. The price was comparable to Science Diet and it took me about two hours once a month. I had to stop when the kids got older - because time became a bigger premium - but I just might start again.

If anyone wants that recipe (and the recipe for an amazing vitamin mix that is good for both dogs and cats) I'll be happy to post them.

There was a recipe for homemade dog food in a book by Dr. Pitcairn - it seemed to be reasonable.

Buy HUMAN grade dog or cat food

What exactly does "human grade" dog food MEAN????

I ask this because I did buy a bag of something they were promoting at PetSmart. I believe it was called "Blue" It only cost me a second mortgage, a loan from the bank...etc.. <_< kidding! But it was expensive. Nico is on Purina One with Yogurt now. The Yogurt is good for her, er........gassy problem. Yeah she lets em loose. Really lovely when my boss has clients in. Thank God literally my boss is a HUGE dog lover!

But really, what does "Human Grade" mean exactly?

dot, do you think there is any dog food that can be bought off the shelf until i can get something in the "natural" category i've been searching for on the internet ?

Excie,

Natural Balance is not made by Menu foods. It is a great quality food, and the first ingredients are the meat (whatever kind you buy--chicken, beef, fish, or venison, then broth, then the same meat's liver, and then meal of the meat. There is not any wheat or corn products in this food. My dogs LOVE both the wet and dry food. They crunch down the venison and brown rice dry food like they will never eat again.

You can buy Natural Balance at Petco or Pet Smart. Here's a link to their website: http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

Ex go to Whole foods or a healthfood store

The recall list grows

The dates get longer and cover more time

Brands like Purina who had nothing recalled now do

They said that snacks were not affected now they are--

Better to be safe by avoiding all of it IMO until the dust settles'

See if your store sells Newman's organics They are safe and some reg. grocery stores have it

Meantime, buy hamberger mix in some green beans and cooked rice --

I think Petco or Petsart has Solid Gold now in some states

Notta mentioned this one:

PS

Ex

just because I posted LINKS doesn't mean you have to get them off the net or something, most linksz have a store location finder thingy with your zip code

Rottie

That Blue looks like a great food, I don't see human grade, you can call the company. Sometimes they can be super foods and because of one small thing they cannot put human grade, and that company is not on the list

I think I will be buying a lot of chicken, burger, and rice this weekend.

We just dodged the bullet and I mean barely. I bought some Old Roy dog treats last weekend. We hadn't really used them - a couple, but not many and the dogs seem fine, but I won't give them any more.

It just turned out that we had some meat trimmings left over from some roast and we had been giving them that instead.

What I'm concerned about is figuring out how much to feed them. With the dry food we just left it out all day and they graze as they want. Any suggestions/help here?

Nicki is a husky and weighs about 65 lbs. Buster is a Beagle/Russell mix and probably ways about 30. How much and how often should I feed them? I don't think I can leave home cooked food out all day, it will get yucky. Not only that, but I'm guessing they will scarf it all down right away anyhow.

Glad you said that about the Purina and Pounce. I feed my kitty Eukanuba dry food and put a topping of Purina one dry on top, just for extra flavor, and pounce for treats.

Last week I noticed he wasn't eating hardly at all and didn't like his pounce treats. So I gave him strickly just the Eukanuba and stopped the Purina One. He's rebounded nicely and his appetite is back to normal.

Even though its dry food, I figured something had to be wrong with the purina and pounce. Normally he loves pounce, but was turning his nose up at it. Smart kitty.
