T-Bone I think that might have been Scott Lafaro, not sure.(circa 1964 or 65) Interesting Bill E. story( From a very credible source.) When Bill and his brother Harry were growing up in NYC, they wanted to take piano lessons. Being the depression, there was only enough extra money for one to study. And so, Harry took the lessons and, upon arriving home, would show Bill everything he could remember from the lesson. His(Bill's) unconventional use of the left hand was groundbreaking in jazz. About 20 years ago, I got to meet and converse at length with Debby(The subject of the piece) My personal favorite bass player to have worked with Bill was Eddie Gomez. Check out "Kind Of Blue" which was a collaborative effort of Bill Evans and Miles Davis.

I think it was recommended because it possibly echoed some of the personal opinions of VP and "Da Boys". Fist of steel in a velvet glove. That was a line I remember being quoted from the book. Kinda sounds like a good title for an episode of W!ll and Gr@ce. But I'm not going to wholesale "dis" the book because, as I said, I never actually read it.

If you think you may have posted something you should not have, you can edit if it's early enough or ask Paw for advise on removing undesired sections. For the record. I found this place while searching for a replacement for my PFAL book. I lent out my materials for years to people who seemed to have a desire to know more but things don't always make it back. I don't have any qualms about having done so because I never directed them towards TWI. Without the group pressure, people are more likely to selectively sort through what they choose to accept or reject. I wouldn't mind having a PFAL book for reference purposes only, but, knowing what I know now, I would never lend it out again.(Even if I thought it WOULD come back) There are probably lots of other materials you could use to achieve your purpose because, as you have probably gathered, most of PFAL was "borrowed" material anyhow. Anyway, I hope you feel comfortable enough to stick around awhile.

I remember when the girls in Cleveland( Yep, I said girls. Some of them were still in high school back then) read this book. There was something in the book about purring like a kitten. A group of them managed to find a way to purr with a sarcastic undertone. Pretty funny looking back on it. That was at the height of the "burn the bra" movement. There was a book that the young men were supposed to read also but I can't recall the title. I'm quite sure I never read it. WG--- As I recall that hubby of yours, he was always a level headed, even tempered guy. ( Most of the time) You two must have hit on something that works, 'cause if my math is correct, you two ought to be rapidly approaching the big 30th mark, no? Lots of this stuff that was presented as profound wisdom was simply baggage VP and "da boys" brought with them from their pre-TWI days. Like saps, we hung on every little word as if there was some deep truth in it all. Much of it didn't have anything at all to do with God's Word.

I had a dream once about something I did as a child, or at least it seemed like I did it as a child. The strange part is that it took place somewhere I have never been but I could describe what I saw in the dream in great detail. For the next week or two, I kept thinking about that and tried to remember if I had really been to that place and just forgotten. In the end, I'm convinced it was nothing more than a dream. Some dreams are really vivid, though, and even though we remember fine details of the content, we somehow completely forget that this information came as part of a dream initially. It seems very real but it is not. Whistle both directions? Yep. Would you expect anything less from someone who plays harmonica? :)

I remember hearing the shpiel on psychic surgery being taught at AC but I don't recall the film clips. Maybe I slept through that part. (Shhh!--- mum's the word!) I guess these spirits were supposed to be real high ranking and that's why they could do intricate proceedures. Along the same lines was the teaching that the only way to become a musical virtuoso was to sell out to the debul. The really intricate passages were supposedly played by the spirit in control. On page 19 of the AC silly-bus, there is a sketch depicting the various lobes of the brain and it shows which sections govern speech, hearing, etc. Yep. Include a sketch from an anatomy 101 book and there you have it, indisputable proof that debuls wrote all the symphonies and controlled the people who played them.

OK-----Here comes something that is only opinion---------- again. I think a lot of these man/woman concepts, that have languished in TWI for so long, came not from the Bible, but from the personal upbringing and experiences of the early leaders. Remember, VPW and associates came of age during the Great Depression and as such reflected the social mores and idiosyncracies of their generation. Somehow it got assigned some sort of Biblical basis and that was acceped as the "OFFICIAL" stance on related issues. You really have to disregard what has been taught or perpetuated in The Way( or any other group, for that matter) and look at what the Bible( or the holy scrit that applies to your particular faith) actually says about the roles that men and women are to fulfil in a marriage. Then, you have to try to understand that within the context of the society in which we live. It's no longer as simple as " Me Tarzan. you Jane".

"Why keep the site active?"---(paraphrased) Simple -------Maintain status quo. As long as they can perpetuate the impression of being an active organization, they can claim the associated benefits. There is plenty of revenue still untapped for those who have remained "faithful" to the organization.

Sorry, JJ, I'm a *Boomer*. I was already "Growed up" when I took the PFAL class in 1972. I got in for all the usual reasons. My exit was more of a fizzle that a bang. I cruised along at twig level for about my last 10 years and finally stopped going in about 1990 when family commitments took priority. I knew almost nothing about what had happened at the upper levels and was amazed at what I found out here at GSC. When I left(faded away) no one bothered to follow up on me despite all the "we sure love ya" stuff I had heard for so long. That was a bit disheartening. That's probably not what you were looking for. I hope some others from your age group post so you can compare notes.

I heard Mr. Wineg@rn3r, Sr. teach on this a couple of times. Mind you, I'm not denouncing nor advocating this as true. I'm simply stating what he taught. He gave no scriptural validation that I recall of. ------------------------------------------------------- Imagine ,if you will, in "3-D", an ice cream cone turned upside down. The cone represents eternity. God sits on top of the cone (which is actually what we think of as the bottom or pointed end.) A line starts at the top and spirals down the side until it reaches the bottom. This line represents what we call time. Man can not comprehend the scope of eternity so he has invented a way to measure out portions of it and he calls those portions "time" Because God is at the apex of the cone, he can see any given point on the spiraling line which represents time. Man, being a traveler on the spiraling line, is responsible for his actions and behaviour as he moves along the line. Not only does God observe, but he can see any point on the line thus he can see the future before it arrives though he allows man to travel freely along his way. ------------------------------------------------------------- This is a fascinating way to view eternity. The problem I always had with it, though, is it makes it difficult to reconcile the value of prayer. Why pray if God can already see the outcome? Is He merely an observer or does He have the ability to alter what happens on that line? Anybody else remember hearing F. & G. Wineg@rn3r teach these things as they moved about as "Roving Ambassadors"? This would have to have been many years ago as I believe both of them have been gone for 20 years or so.

First, let me state that I do not know this tune. Therefore: I found it interesting that I instantly recognized some of the lyrics as being used elsewhere. The opening line is also the opening line to: 1. 3o'clock Blues(BB King) 2. Talking In My Sleep (Crystal Gayle) The last line of the post is not only a line in a famous song but the title as well.("I'm So Lonsome I could Cry") It was done by: 1. Hank Williams(He wrote it) 2. Elvis 3. Johnny Cash 4.B.J. Thomas (big hit) 5. Cowboy Junkies 6. Skeeter Davis ( my personal favorite) And probably a dozen others I've not heard yet. And yet I don't know this one

Yep. Did the "stretch the coffee" thing in Fellowlaborers. I was on breakfast duty for 2 years so I am guilty of lots and lots of stretching. You were supposed to put a pinch of salt on top of the new grounds to help cut the off-taste. Just for the record---------IT TASTES LIKE CR@P!!

It's old fashioned "rationalization". Back in the '60's, I used to write music. Most of it sucked but a few pieces weren't too bad. If someone took one of my songs and made it a hit(Not very likely), I would be thrilled. If they did so and claimed they had written the material, that would be wrong. Sure, it would be great if lots of people got to hear it. It would still be wrong. The "60's and '70's were laden with various radical groups that had specific agendas. The Symbionese Liberation Army and The Black Panthers are two that come to mind. These groups were willing to resort to violent, sometimes murderous actions to further their cause. One could rationalize and say,"Yes, we robbed banks and murdered people but it was to further our cause." The ends don't always justify the means. If you think Bullinger or Stiles or whoever had a valuable point to make that you would like to cite, do so and give credit where credit is appropriate. It's just plain wrong (and sometimes illegal) to pretend someone elses work is your own no matter how much "good" might possibly come of it. Just my opinion.

RRII Somewhat off topic. I grew up in the Great Lakes region so I'm probably more aware of the Coast Guard's contributions than someone who grew up in, let's say, Arizona. The CG has been around almost as long as we have been a country though they were not officially called that specific name until about WWI. I think part of the recognition problem people have is that the CG was never part of the Dept. Of Defense in a technical sense. Originally they were under the Dept. of the Treasury and then the Dept. of Transportation. Now, they are under The Dept. of Homeland Security. None of this diminishes the contributions they have made. I'm only mentioning this to point to why people have perhaps been less aware of the CG than other branches. As to the regognition of Memorial Day: Is it some how tied to the idea of not esteeming one day above another? I don't really know. It was just a thought .
