I'm sure most of us who sat through PFAL remember how this verse was handled. VPW taught that your "name" represents everything related to you . Therefore God magnified the Word(considered it more important) above everything else related to Him. A modern day translation might be that "nothing is more important than the Word" The problem with this is that it assumes that people in an ancient culture assigned the same significance to the word "name" as VPW said it has in this time we are currently in. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn't. I don't personally know. I don't honestly have the skills and know-how to accurately research that question. I think, though, that to do an honest study of that question, one would have to use an array of tools that were not part of the PFAL class. Remember the "lambano" example? It went something like: Lambano---lamballo ----ballo ----ball ----throw--- throw it out ----throw it outward------manifest----SIT!!! How's that for a scholarly approach to defining a word? <_<

Lone Wolf Heck, I didn't even know about what was going on with the guys much less with the gals. :blink: I do know of one incident in particular where a female WC grad (Area Leader) had her designs set on a particular male subordinate. She constantly manipulated schedules and circumstances to ensure that she would be alone with him. This would have been in about 1977 or 1978. He was married and had a child. His wife was furious about the situation. The AL being discussed tried to use the situation to leverage her upward mobility in the organization. He was not the least bit interested in this particular woman and that really insulted her. She eventually got reasigned to another area and that was the end of the story. I didn't place any significance on it that would have been unique to The Way. At the time, I saw it as the same type of thing that happens in countless other organizations. I'm confident this kind of thing probably happened elsewhere because that is part of human nature. But then again, I'm not the brightest bulb in the lamp when it comes to recognizing this type of thing.

I'm not so sure I heard it actually "taught" but I remember being "told" about this. This was supposedly part of why Psalms was written. We used to make up impromtu music and sing the Psalms. Not to appease the devil spirits but because we tried to imagine what they (Psalms) might have been like originally. Through The looking Glass You asked that I clarify my point regarding Fred Brito. On another thread,"All the women-----", someone suggested that perhaps VPW may not have believed all that he expounded from the podium.(my paraphrasing) Someone else responded with this quote," Are you suggesting that somebody can teach something so specific, so faithful for so long, so positive and exalting of Jesus Christ, and not really believe it himself? Preposterous." Fred Brito has been doing that very thing since about 1970. He impersonated city officials, PhD's, medical experts, professional fund raisers and,yes, even a Catholic priest,(a man of the cloth) with a great deal of success and belief on the part of those he was deceiving. All the while he himself was fully aware he was living a falsehood. One common thread that appeared in the testimony of those he had duped was that most of them said something like"Gee, he did so many good things,too." Now where have I heard that before? As to the funeral: We can only know the facts surrounding the event, such as who invited him, how he got there, etc. We can only speculate on what was in his heart and mind at the time. Maybe he had gotten to a point in his life where he was able to forgive VPW.(He was about 80 at the time). Maybe he thought it was good PR for his own ministry. Or maybe he was just a classy guy who was willing to forsake his own ego to further a cause he really believed in. I don't know if any of those examples explains it nor can anyone else for certain unless they have some inside information that originated with BG himself.

Did B.G. attend VP's funeral? Did they have a personal relationship? Did B.G.mind having his work plagiarized? These are all moot questions and do not for a moment negate or justify what VP did. He lied about getting his information directly from God. (He stated that he tossed all extraneous materials when he began his search. Obviously a falsehood.) He lied about having information that was unknown to anyone but himself. (Again, an obvious falsehood) This evening I watched an airing of Dateline, the TV show. The subject of the show was how a con man named Fred Brito assumed multiple identities and won over the trust of numerous people in the process. When interviewed, people who were unaware of his deception spoke glowingly of what a benevolent man he was. They were shocked to discover otherwise. Still, that does not alter the cold, hard fact that the man deceived and conned countless people for the last three decades. A quick visit to BG Leonard's web site(ctcoftexas.com) will display the forward to his book "Gifts of The Spirit". Allowing for some obvious paraphrasing, the gist of the forward may sound hauntingly familiar to anyone who has sat through PFAL. I guess we could speculate on whether or not BG and VPW wore the same shoe size but it only draws attention away from the real issue at hand,VPW abscounded BG's work and claimed it was his own. Capt. S. That whole scenario about God teaching Wierwille The Word like it hadn't been known for 2,000 years is a lengthy and disheartening path to explore. He took these "new" truths ( in some cases "word for word") from the likes of B.G. Leonard, Stiles,Bullinger,etc.,etc. The PFAL class, the Holy Spirit book, the figures of speech study,even the characters of Maggie Muggins and Henry Bulloco were "lifted" from the works of others who came before him. Hence, "Like it hadn't been known" was an outright fabrication. There is a ton of information here related to that very subject. I am not very proficient at helping someone navigate this site. If there is something in particular you would like to find, I'm sure you only need ask directions. Waysider

In the 1940s, Father Flannagan(The Boy's Town guy) contacted the people at Kiwanis Magazine and asked them for permission to use a variation of this phrase he had seen in their publication in the 1920s.
