  1. I hope I may be excused for posting for no other reason than to bring this back into visible range, for possible benefit to some new people we have had come in.
  2. You'll make some friends. And not everyone here is an old fart!
  3. This is the same piece I quoted several days ago, but I'm curious, did you have any later personal contact with CG; did he speak to you? The reason I ask is I was yanked out long before his time, and know little other then the "letter".
  4. Hey...anyone know when the Cy Young awards are announced???
  5. Nope....and see comment below after my quote addition... "I'm going next. So if ole' fat foot gets stuck, I won't get stuck behind her." "I saw a young officer on deck the other day, and he looked DAMN familiar... even with his clothes on." "So... he recognized ya, so?" "So doesn't that bother you?" "If it bothered me, I wouldn'ta married ya." "Well first you arrested me six times." "Well I had to figure out some way to keep you off the streets... until you'd marry me." "We're cut off from the rest of the world. They can't get to us. Maybe we can get to them. You've said enough, now get out of the way." I have to :D !!! Very few on these GS forums are more disliking of swearing and foul language than I am. Especially when it comes in large volumes. Seriously, even certain obvious abbreviations turn me away, at least a little. But I didn't really think a quote from a movie would raise alarm bells. But I think anyone can figure without repeating it what word in the first quote above was changed to fat foot!
  6. I don't have any famous friends. I have had a few famous contacts. Like my former HS classmate Gary beach who is big on Broadway; Mark Hamill, whose state FC I run (SD membership: 1), the late Gen. Paul Tibbets (history related; I was in brief touch with him a couple years ago; he died a year ago). Many many years ago, my dad introduced me to the guy who played the town drunk Otis on the Andy Griffith show. Almost as many years ago, I got Mudcat Grant to strike a personal pose for me. That's about it I guess.... but I too loved Mad Magazine. I remember when they upped their price from "Our price 25 cents cheap" to "Our price 30 cents kinda cheap".

    8th Corps

Do us a favor, and don't make your 10,000th post on our thread. Which is probably safe, you'll probably do it on the political forum or baseball thread before you even see this post! And yes. I have noticed your diversity lately to the extend of posting on a few other forums.
  8. If you're in such a good mood, let's all line up for the favor asking! Of course, I guess that is .
  9. ...and who cares about LCM kicking that field goal??!!
  10. Maybe, though from my perspective, there's more to baseball than MLB. and there's more to MLB than Manny! (especially since he left the Indians) Yea, it is fun to watch on TV or in person. But how many of you have felt the pleasing sting of a hard foul off the mask? But I know where you're coming from. GSers have never been that excited about football it seems. I mean, what does NFL stand for anyway?
  11. "I'm going next. So if ole' fat foot gets stuck, I won't get stuck behind her." "I saw a young officer on deck the other day, and he looked DAMN familiar... even with his clothes on." 12. I know technically I played by the rules, but i still feel I cheated. So I can't make this one too hard I guess. It will be up soon.
  13. Looks like we won't get the chance, because someone else upended the Longhorns for ya.
  14. I suppose I could google since I have committed to no more guesses...but I'll wait and hear from George. Say, he doesn't make grills, does he?
  15. I'll never forget the fire sale the champion Marlins had right after beating my Indians in the World Series several years ago.
  16. If so, I'd rather hear it from George first, because there were quite a number of sequels, of which I watched none fully. Unless you can add an "absolutely sure" to that "you're right". Plus courtesy commands me to wait a little for his word, as long as he didn't just leave on vacation. I know more about these movies from my son commenting on them than from watching the bits and pieces I've watched.
  17. I don't think you need to be excused. There were changes in the daily life of the "ordinary believer" over the years, such life becoming more controlled. I have no argument to make that life cant be loosened back up, and that the leaders she has contact with are OK, and that the people in fellowships are nice. One thing (and only one) for me to check things out would be, could I take a trip to HQ and walk around freely, not being eyed with suspicion, as I did as late as 1976? However, more importantly, while many people were living such a nice fellowship life back in the 60s and 70s, there was a lot going on higher up that we didn't know about. Kristen Skedgell's book provides a fine (but only one) example. Her book of course would not prove anything about right now, nor would any book I think, but my big question (I'm sure others will chime in with theirs) would be, are wrongs being admitted and acknowledged? Or, is life going on 1984 style, pretending nothing really bad happened? Remember everyone, we are dealing with someone who went back in. When they left, did they know the worst of what went on?

    8th Corps

Well, that worked only to the extent that I heard again from my first 8th corps roomie. With that, I make the 200th post on this thread Gee, I am so glad everyone cares about that, especially since I gave everone more than a week. No wisecracks from the 9th, please.
  19. Not really, if you use that terminology. It would be fun to watch. Now where is Barack when you need him? We need a little redistribution of wealth in this sport!
  20. Okay, I think it will be keeping with the rules to make one guess only, and without recognizing which one of the several, I can only say... Halloween 2?
  21. uh-oh... I don't think I would really deserve the next turn if my guess here would be right.

    A Love Story

I already did! I mean, my mind spends less time in the gutter than my bowling ball. And that only happens (and usually does) when I'm shooting for the ten pin.
  23. Not in this game, he let us have our own, but Simon answered on the baseball thread, narrowing it down to two, and if he had re read my whole post, he could have eliminated me.
  24. Yea, Simon, well, you know I was 8th corps, and I mentioned the FG won the game for the staff, so you could have eliminated me. Your other guess is correct. BTW, despite not having played organized football, I could kick a field goal; have practiced them...but no more than 35 yards, even with nobody rushing. Being a Penn Stater, I remember my first year there, with the Lions having an unbeaten season, and watching the Orange Bowl where they beat Kansas when the Jayhawks has 12 players on the field when the two point conversion initially failed. Later, I remember LCM telling us at Emporia how he had been on that Kansas team. That catcher probably either realized right after his throw that he was trying to catch an already out runner, or in making the play at the plate, couldn't be sure that it was that runner or the runner originally on first coming around. With the play happening so quickly, the latter seems unlikely, but possible. Years ago I was a Washington Senators fan when Ron Hansen did the unassisted TP thing for them.
  25. Yea, I suppose in either case you're doing the shouting, whether it is you or your monitor doing the jumping.
