  1. That is comforting I have not seen the jumping. yet. And I know that doesn't make me any smarter than Paw. :)
  2. Aw, cmon, nobody should need any more hints! I've given up on trying to figure out the Indians ahead of time. Dunno why nobody knew how to hit until the second half of the season when it was too late. When Cabrera got his unassisted TP, I think it was in May, all it did was save Cliff Lee from a loss. The Tribe scored only one run in that game and lost it in extra innings after Lee left. Of course one thing I can do in the offseason is come up with more umpiring quizzes to keep you on your toes; hopefully there is someone besides Simon who is good on the rules
  3. So does that mean we can get going on next season now?

Happy Birthday, Happy day after; in fact, happy whole year after!
  5. Anyway, don't wanna hide current business. George, i see you online, and you're up!!! To keep George's post up front, I'll just edit this one and say thanks George, but I have no idea on this one (the post that follows).
  6. Dunno, I said might. And that would have to be if both made it to the BCS title game. As long as I'm on a sports topic, you are invited to try to answer my field goal question in the sports forum. It shouldn't be hard!
  7. Have a wonderful day and year! Happy Birthday! and now we're both 29!
  8. Well, it's still not as bad as missing "The Great Escape".
  9. This thread will go down the line pretty fast, and should, but I can't resist telling this one. I have never played organized football, or at least anyhing more organized than flag and pickup touch. I won't go into the obvious reasons, but of the football I have played, there was only one game I ever played in during which a field goal was so much as attempted. It was good and won the game. 1977, Emporia, 8th corps versus staff. Staff unfortunately won. Can anyone guess who kicked that field goal?
  10. Ralph was really into some of the softball games we had at HQ in the fall of 1979.
  11. I'm not the one to say it, but I'm sure you're right. I've seen it, but it's been so long I just couldnt get my bell rung with the oodles of dialogue WW was graciously giving us. THE scene just overshadowed everything in my mind. I havent seen the updated version. Oh, yea..... Funny how I got JAWS because of that scene which recounted a bit of history I know more about than anyone else on GS, unless there is one of us around who had a relative that went down with the Indianapolis.
  12. Still workin' on it. That line and a couple others makes it an oldie...60s or earlier.
  13. Funny, I do the same thing, when I talk about my sister I always make sure to point out that she is my 4 years older sister. Not because I am afraid of my age, but because I like to bug her. Which reminds me, I still have to bug her about my school beating hers (Ohio State) on the football field Saturday. ooopppssss. I know there was a better reason to post...Happy Birthday!!! My interim corps/WOW year was in Philly 1978-79.
  14. Yea, I suppose my problem is that in the short time I spent with him, I did hot have enough time to observe this fully; plus TWI HQ may not have been the best environment to see how versatile he is. You don't suppose you could delete the "non-college educated" part and still have your statement be true, could you? But, you might be surprised in my baseball environment not only how many players and coaches don't know these rules, but even fellow umpires (At the level I have been working at in recent years, I am the senior old fart (in experience as well as age) of the group.
  15. Yea, the overthrowing and baserunning are moot. But it pretty much has to be done, at least at the levels I call, because most don't know the rules in this case, or are not sure. Like a defensive football player who picks up a fumble and runs with it because he didn't hear the whistle after the runner was judges to be down before losing the ball. Of course Simon is right, and is hereby designated my umpiring assistant, which might be kind of presumptive, since I don't know for sure that he doesn't know more than I do about the rules. With two outs, anything goes for the batter/runner, no matter which base(s) are occupied or empty. He's not automatically out on an infield pop up, or on a third strike. Simon even well knows about that infield fly situation; i.e. even if the situation applies ((runners on first and second or bases loaded; less than two outs) the ball has to be catchable with ordinary effort. With very strong winds and a stadium to swirl them around, ordinary effort does not do it. By the same token, an infield fly may be called on a ball caught by an outfielder on the outfield grass if, in the ump's judgement, it could have been easily enough handled by an infielder. Geez, I think Simon's been hiding something.
  16. Was this thread supposed to stay dormant by law for that long? Actually, my team might be able to take care of those Longhorns for ya. Is everyone taking the same vacation? Actually, the reason I came here in the first place was to wonder what happened to Simon, and had to choose between here and the baseball thread to ask (It hasn't been long enough to warrent a "Where the hell is Simon" thread.
  17. Test question: Bases loaded, two out. Batter swings and misses at strike three, but the catcher fails to hold the pitch and the ball pops out and rolls onto the plate. The batter takes off for first base before the catcher can tag him. The Catcher picks the ball up off the plate and throws to first. The ball gets there in plenty of time, but it sails just over the first baseman's reach and down the right field foul line. The right fielder picks it up and throws it in, but not until the runners on second and third have crossed the plate, and the batter and runner originally on first have reached second and third respectively. What is the correct ruling? I suppose for emphasis I should add that the team at bat was one run down in the bottom of the 9th before the play, but for ruling purposes that doesn't change things, just makes the ruling more critical of course. Oh, and to remove any doubt, by "pops out", I mean immediately, that is that the catcher does not catch the ball, to remove any question about whether or not he held it long enough.
  18. That is why Rocky is so amazing...he is active on both. I bet he uses this thread because he needs the heart after posting in that other place. Speaking of the World Series, today is one day when the two things I get paid for come together.
  19. This is one of the few threads where no response isn't necessarily bad. This surely means that these are honest to goodness real groaners! '
  20. Maybe. One of the reasons I had to do that with "Escape" is that I had been professing to be a knowledgable Steve McQueen fan, having before then gone with "The Blob" on this forum. In the meantime, is anyone else following? I do this because when I'm up, I like to at least know that someone is trying or thinking about my clues.
  21. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not ignoring you. I just don't know this one, so far. I just hope it isn't one of those I'll for not knowing, like "The Great Escape" a while back.
  22. many years ago, when Marlon Brando refused his Oscar, that was a good example of how a Starbucks the establishment.
  23. One reason I don't get into the political forum more than I do is that sometimes it seems that the field of politics is Chock full'o Nuts. I remember a few years ago when Tiger Woods Sanka putt to win the Masters.

    Happy Birthday Ham

Yea, happy birthday! Still young, too.
  25. Ooooppppssss.......... Sorry Joe, I got you mixed up with my umpiring hero, Ron Luciano. geez, Rocky, I've been watching the daily post count. If you keep up this pace, you might even overtake Excie in time. Of course, I suppose you might spool down a little after the elections are over.
