He's a kid, with hopes of a football career and getting an education. Give 'im a break.

What he thinks is of interest to the sports community and they wrote about what he's doing. Because as we all know, sports figures have insight into life and we should all be interested in what they're doing, and thinking. Once you've had enough minor concussions, insight is the logical result so it only makes sense, the amount of attention we give to sports figures.

If he gets his degree and does well it will be because he applies himself and works his azs off, bible or no bible.

That writer's a goof - he's nuts about his comparison to Catholicism. Remember - it's media. You can be dammed sure that if there was a big new story and coverage on a Catholic pedo-priest getting sued and it was in the news, he'd be croaking a different tune and less likely to run a point-blank story with no reference to it at all - his editor might be inclined to sit on it for awhile. He's defending his stance only because there's no media coverage on the Way -

if readers decide to research the Way they'll find ample information to refer to.

I don't know how this little story got to be talking about not having choices, but to me it seems to prove just the opposite...Here's a kid raised in the way who's playing college football...It isn't as though the story is about a college football player who gave up his career to go out WOW or onto some other ministry venture...Then you might have a reason to go chastise the reporter...I don't see where the way is propping the guy up---it wasn't a press release near as I can tell...

Sports pages are full of human interest stories about athletes...If the story was about him spending his days off fixing up and restoring old Corvairs would you want to e-mail the reporter and tell him those Corvairs were pieces of junk that were unsafe at any speed?...Speaking of cars, Tom, when I went in-residence, I had a red '63 Galaxie 500 fastback, but I didn't bring it with me because the 'what to bring list' said that if you bring a car, it must be in fine-looking shape and in good running condition...I was very disappointed when one of the first cars I saw at Emporia was excie's rusted-out,oil burning, bucket of bolts...

Had I had a choice, Lifted, I'd have picked somebody prettier than you to be my fellow taxperson...

I don't know the exact dictionary definition of some terms, but it seems like "option" and "choice" get mixed up at times...Just as we all had different experiences, I think we all had different options with which to choose from...We were not all dealt the same hand...I had the option of leaving the way any time I wanted to and go back to whatever it was I came from and face whatever it was I didn't want to face...When I was good and ready, that's exactly what I did...I now have three grown kids who are the ages that I was when I was involved with the way...As a parent, I think it my duty to continually remind them that they have choices, or options, with which to choose from...

The fact of the matter is that IF you are searching for TRUTH (not counterfiet) you don't take a class

by TWI,you don't take a class evolved from a liar named veepee, that is just twisted and you sure don't encourage other people to do the same(especially if you have been there)

I don't care if this guy is playing football for NFL or is a deaf blind wheelchair bound person that eats

his dinner out of a straw,it is NOT what he is doing ! He is NO differant in Gods eyes just because he

plays football for Georgia Tech.

It is WHAT he is following and encouraging OTHER people who "don't"know the damage cults can do

to people.

Obviously they don't know that The Way International is just a big retail rip off using"the bible" to get

MONEY and cheap slave labor to push it, so this "human intrest story" is more like a bait lure saying'

Oh! Look at this guy he is a gentle giant, good football player yes! and.....blah blah blah twi liars teaching

more lies . Kids in college reading this little paper don't KNOW about TWI just what they hear or see.

The ocean is really beautiful too but you know their are sharks out there too, and if your not prepared

to deal with that(don't really KNOW bible) TWI is the wrong place to dive into the bible unless you want

to get hurt, with their twisted scripture and class by a twisted person who was a liar (makes me sick!)

The "choice" discussion is a tangent off someone trying, as usual, to defend TWI and is irrelevant, imo, to the discussion - not to mention the fact that we've had that discussion ad nauseum here already.

I had a bit of correspondence with the reporter of the story and what it boils down to is this - Michael Johnson is a phenomenal football player for GA Tech. He is expected to be a first or second round NFL draft pick next season. That's a big deal and they wanted to do a pre-season human interest story on him. Whether that was him selling flowers in his Moonie getup in the airports - teaching yoga lessons in the ghetto or raising award winning roses - they were going to do a story on him.

Because of his involvement with TWI, he doesn't really have much other "human interests" in his life to report on. His whole life is football and TWI, so that's all the reporter had to go on.

I'm still disgusted to see TWI painted in a positive light and I wonder what will happen to the team mates he has unwittingly involved with TWI, but I also see my knee-jerk reaction to seeing the article and am reminded how far I still have to go.

I think the "choice" discussion became an issue when someone suggested that this man is brainwashed and in bondage. The choice argument is not defending twi; it is respecting this man's choice as a citizen of this country to choose what religion he participates in even when one might not agree with the tenets of that religion.

I think it's really good that you see your knee-jerk reaction. I don't think some folks are able or willing to do that.

As a general observation: when some ex-twi folks get to the place that peoples' associations with twi don't bother them anymore and they can let people's associations and choices with twi go, and wish these folks the best and best wishes, then I think they will be at peace and can move on. I did that with the religion of my youth... I wish those folks the best too and spend zero time trying to dissuade their decision.

Oldiesman, I know when people first "got into the word" they just couldn't contain their excitement and proceeded to dump their perspectives and opinions on everyone. I did it. There was not much in the way of a "live and let live" ideology in TWI - you were either in the group or you were definitely not going to spend paradise in the house. Moreover, the only way to make it to the kitchen was to be deeply involved. I made a conscious decision to plan on spending paradise in the latrine. I figured everyone would have to visit it from time to time, so I could keep up with what was going on in the kitchen.

Until one develops a "live and let live" mentality, the tendency is going to be to correct the wrongness of someone else's choice. Most of the ones here who are still in correcting mode have not been out for 20 years like I have. I spent a fair amount of time in the beginning trying to reason with my friends who were still in. Then I stopped.

Hopefully this young man won't do like so many others did and insulate himself from the rest of the campus by living in a "Way Home" with other "believers," but if he does, that's his choice.

I must have missed that part. <_<

What I object to is not his personal involvement.

That's really none of my business.

What I object to is the favorable picture this article appears to paint of The Way and its various products such as the classes and fellowships. The Way is nothing more than a Multi-Level Marketing scheme that has preyed on the unsuspecting for decades. This article simply aroused curiosity in a manner that favored The Way.

Well, ain't we so special. We beez duh judge, jury and hangman. You have got to be kidding me. You have nothing better to do than e-mail a reporter? Let us spend our time more wisely. There are folks out there that really need it. Did anybody e-mail Johnson to help and inform him? Somebody needs to e-mail Nike.

If Johnson was affiliated with a porn group, or the Jihad, or a satanic cult would you have e-mailed the reporter?

There is one sentence that struck me. Barnes said, I want to strengthen my relationship with God and learn more about Him. The boy wants to learn more about God. Yuh, think the Almighty Father can meet him where he is if he has that desire? Duh, yuh think Father Almighty supercedes twi and all other cults, organization and religions if someone has that desire? Well, He did with and for me even when I was in twi.

Yes, they have access to a computer. They said they Googled the Hebrew translation on the Internet. They were able to get a better understanding of what the verse meant. I wonder if twi allows that. If they don't please e-mail them.

Twi never gave us a choice or freedom of will? I could have walked anytime. And I eventually did. I do miss the commaraderie that I had with a lot of the brethren. We were young and really loved the Lord and each other and wanted to do what was right in His eyes. Even looking back now twi did not decide that for me. Then again, I have never put my trust in man.

The One Body. It does hold and bind together. So, pray for this young man Johnson. No matter what cult or religion or denomination we are to love all.
