OK,

Time for a little history here....

This off a web search about our family names... Strange and Grey (spelled Gray... as it is in modern times)

quote:
(The Strange family desc. of "Guy de Bretagne" (d. 1331 France) and belonged to the Grey’s Clan in England at this time. They also were family of Roger de Somery, our ancestor, level 9)

So TOM...

(No longer SIR Tom)

I submit that you are from my loins! (Well, actually, from the loins of my ancestors)

I offer my ring...

I found out something interesting yesterday morning, while messing around with geneaology. My 7th-great grandfather was a gentleman named Shuabal Stearns; this much I knew. I learned that he is the man who started the Southern Baptist denomination, and pioneered the sing-songy, hypnotic style of preaching characteristic of many Southern preachers today.

Not so sure how I feel about that.

It does seem, however, that if I spent my youth making religion the center of my life, that it was pretty much hereditary.

Life is sooooo weird.

Nika...

Heard that! Something in the genes, I guess. It is happening in my family, too. For instance, my grandfather (x generations removed) on my Mom's side fought in the Continental Army under George Washington. Her other grandfathers were either military men or ministers after that. Generations of them.

Of course I joined a cult… a bit of a family embarrassment. icon_rolleyes.gif:rolleyes:-->

But, as of 2 weeks ago, my son got 2 nominations for West Point. icon_biggrin.gif:D-->

So he is getting the family train back on the tracks.

You are right… it is kind of odd. Seems to give credence to the idea that what some people become may have been born into them or handed to them from their forefathers.

TGN,

The Strange One is referring to the recently infamous duo of Paris Hilton (of the Hilton Hotel founder's family...megamega bucks) and Nicole Ritchie (daughter of Lionel Ritchie).

Tom,

Thanks for taking the time to try give me a clue...

I just read this article from the Herald Sun to try and get up to speed...

But what the Heck is Tom talking about in context of this thread? I guess I should ask him.

Tom: Or should I say COUSIN Tom icon_razz.gif:P-->...as Ex so CORRECTLY noticed... What are you talking about? Please connect a dot or two...

(and leave DOT out of it, she's 11 corps like me)

Paris and Nicole have done a reality show, where they live on a farm for (however long; I didn't watch it) and pretend to be farmers. Basically, they just show off their ignorance of anything except Gucci and caviar.

Wow, TooGrayNow!

Two nominations is exceedingly cool. They don't hand those things out like party favors. I've heard that almost nobody ever gets two, because none of those able to nominate want to burn a nomination on a kid who's already getting nominated by someone else.

Well, I was wrong about something which I said on this thread yesterday; that's what I get for diving into new information, without checking for a secondary source.

As it turns out, I am not descended from Shubal Stearns the Baptist minister, but from his baby sister, Martha. In my family, there were:

Shubal (came in 1630)

Charles (came as a small child in 1630)

Shubal (first generation born here)

Shubal

Martha (who married Daniel Marshall, another mover and shaker in the Great Awakening)

But in the Shubal-the-Baptist's family, there were actually three Shubals in a row:

Shubal

Charles

Shubal

Shubal

Shubal (had no children, but started the Southern Baptists.)

So, I'm not exactly descended from the sing-songy, hypnotic-preacher guy, after all.

Learning this was almost like taking a genealogical Tums. Like my father-in-law says, we don't get an eraser when we learn our family histories.

Nevertheless, I'm kind of relieved.

This is not a very interesting post, and I apologize for that. But I said something which turned out not to be true, and wanted to set the record straight.

Next time, I'll tell a joke, or something.

This is a "real men will only answer "C" tests.

When is it okay to throw away a set of veteran underwear?

A. When it has turned the color of a dead whale and developed new holes so large that you're not sure which ones were originally intended for your legs.

B. When it is down to eight loosely connected underwear molecules and has to be handled with tweezers.

C. It is never okay to throw away veteran underwear. A real guy checks the garbage regularly in case somebody, and we are not naming names, (but this would be his wife) is quietly trying to discard his underwear.

ourseestorEx is now one of the invisible ones...

and where are the three kings? Tut,Sim and Dip?

... I've been here and I've been there and I've been in between...

Yes, I'm not too much into the "hidden" thing. I think it's cool for other folks, though, if they like that sort of thing. Kind of like, some people like lemon chiffon, and others prefer Texas Pecan Pie.

Oh, pecan pie.

Now, what was I saying?

Oh. You can often find information on your family by simply doing a Google search on the "farthest back" ancestor whose name you know. You'll probably pick up on someone else's research.

Personally, I benefitted from my mom and my mother-in-law. They are both "into" genealogy, and my mother-in-law in particular presented us with a couple of extremely organized binders last summer, one for each side of my family.

That woman is amazing.

I've been investigating a few things on my own, too.

Interesting to know that traits in our family didn't come from our own brains, alone. I've identified definite trends which span generations.
