Here's two I could think of... there's others that come and go but these two seem to stick around...

PIRATE LOOKS AT FORTY

Jimmy Buffett

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call,

Wanted to sail upon your waters

since I was three feet tall.

You've seen it all, you've seen it all.

Watch the men who rode you,

Switch from sails to steam.

And in your belly you hold the treasure

that few have ever seen, most of them dreams,

Most of them dreams.

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late.

The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder

I'm an over forty victim of fate

Arriving too late, arriving too late.

I've done a bit of smugglin'

I've run my share of grass.

I made enough money to buy Miami,

But I *%^#*ed it away so fast,

Never meant to last, never meant to last.

I have been drunk now for over two weeks,

I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks,

But I've got to stop wishin',

Got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again.

Just a few friends, just a few friends.

I go for younger women, lived with several awhile

And though I ran away, they'll come back one day.

And still could manage a smile

It just takes awhile, just takes awhile.

Mother, mother ocean, after all these years I've found

My occupational hazard being my occupations

just not around.

I feel like I've drowned,

Gonna head uptown.

TOM SAWYER - RUSH

A modern-day warrior

Mean mean stride,

Today's Tom Sawyer

Mean mean pride.

Though his mind is not for rent,

Don't put him down as arrogant.

His reserve, a quiet defense,

Riding out the day's events.

The river

What you say about his company

Is what you say about society.

-Catch the mist -Catch the myth

-Catch the mystery -Catch the drift.

The world is, the world is,

Love and life are deep,

Maybe as his skies are wide.

Today's Tom Sawyer,

He gets high on you,

And the space he invades

He gets by on you.

No, his mind is not for rent

To any god or government.

Always hopeful, yet discontent,

He knows changes aren't permanent,

But change is.

What you say about his company

Is what you say about society.

-Catch the witness -Catch the wit,

-Catch the spirit -Catch the spit.

The world is, the world is,

Love and life are deep,

Maybe as his eyes are wide.

Exit the warrior,

Today's Tom Sawyer,

He gets high on you,

And the energy you trade,

He gets right on to the friction of the day

My being a product of the 80's is really going to show here...

My Prerogative

by Bobby Brown

It's love it's love love get busy

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Now now why don't they just let me live

Oh oh oh i don't need permission

Make my own decisions oh

That's my prerogative

They say I'm crazy

I really don't care

That's my prerogative

They say I'm nasty

But I don't give a damn

Gettin' is how I live

Some ask me questions

Why am I so real

But they don't understand me

I really don't know the deal

About a brother trying hard to make it right

Not long ago before

I won this fight sing

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me

Why don't they just let me live (Tell me why)

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions oh

That's my prerogative (It's my prerogative)

It's my prerogative

It's the way that I wanna live (It's my prerogative)

I can do just what I feel (It's my prerogative)

No one can tell me what to do (It's my prerogative)

Cause what I'm doin'

I'm doin' for you ah

Don't get me wrong

I'm really not zooped

Ego trips is not my thing

All these strange relationships

Really gets me down

I see nothin wrong with

Spreading myself around sing

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me (yeah)

Why don't they just let me live (Tell me why)

I don't need permission (i don't need)

Make my own decisions (my own decisions)

That's my prerogative (It's my prerogative-2x)

I can do what I wanna do (It's my prerogative)

Truly live my life (It's my prerogative)

I'm doing it just for you (It's my prerogative)

Tell me, tell me

Why can't I live my life (live my life)

Without all of the things that people say (oooh)

yo Tell it, kick it like this

I can do what I wanna do

Me and you

Together, together, together...

Everybody's talking all this stuff about me (everybody's talking)

Why don't they just let me live (why)

(Why don't they just let me live)

I don't need permission (i don't need permission from nobody

Make my own decisions

That's my prerogative

(Lyrics: Elliot Ingber / Music: Elliot Ingber)

Fraternity Of Man - 1969

Little Feat

Grateful Dead

Chorus:

Don't Bogart that joint my friend

Pass it over to me

Don't Bogart that joint my friend

Pass it over to me

Roll another one

Just like the other one

You've been hanging on to it

And I sure would like a hit

CHORUS

Ro-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oll another one

Just like the other one

That one's just 'bout burned to the end

So come on and be a real friend

Sunshine On My Shoulders

by John Denver

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy

Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry

Sunshine on the water looks so lovely

Sunshine almost always makes me high

If i had a day that i could give you

I'd give to you a day just like today

If i had a song that i could sing for you

I'd sing a song to make you feel this way

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy

Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry

Sunshine on the water looks so lovely

Sunshine almost always makes me high

If i had a tale that i could tell you

I'd tell a tale sure to make you smile

If i had a wish that i could wish for you

I'd make a wish for sunshine all the while

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy

Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry

Sunshine on the water looks so lovely

Sunshine almost always makes me high

Sunshine almost all the time makes me high

Sunshine almost always

Redemption Song

Words by Bob Marley

Old pirates yes they rob I

Sold I to the merchant ships

Minutes after they took I from the

Bottom less pit

But my hand was made strong

By the hand of the almighty

We forward in this generation triumphantly

All I ever had is songs of freedom

Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom

Cause all I ever had redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery

None but ourselves can free our minds

Have no fear for atomic energy

Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets

While we stand aside and look

Some say it's just a part of it

We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom

Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery

None but ourselves can free our minds

Have no fear for atomic energy

Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets

While we stand aside and look

Yes some say it's just part of it

We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom

Cause all I ever had, redemption songs

All I ever had, redemption songs

These songs of freedom, songs of freedom

Jim,

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels

Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields

In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one

I don’t know where I’m running now, I’m just running on

Running on - running on empty

Running on - running blind

Running on - running into the sun

But I’m running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive

Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive

In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own

I don’t know when that road turned onto the road I’m on

Running on - running on empty

Running on - running blind

Running on - running into the sun

But I’m running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go

People need some reason to believe

I don’t know about anyone but me

If it takes all night, that’ll be all right

If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels

I don’t know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels

I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through

Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on - running on empty

Running on - running blind

Running on - running into the sun

But I’m running behind

Honey you really tempt me

You know the way you look so kind

I’d love to stick around but I’m running behind

You know I don’t even know what I’m hoping to find

Running into the sun but I’m running behind

Jackson Browne, Running On Empty

This may be wishful thinking, but I would like the lyrics of the Irish song "The Parting Glass" to be my theme.

Of all the money that e'er I spent

I've spent it in good company

And all the harm that ever I did

Alas it was to none but me

And all I've done for want of wit

To memory now I can't recall

So fill to me the parting glass

Good night and joy be with you all

If I had money enough to spend

And leisure to sit awhile

There is a fair maid in the town

That sorely has my heart beguiled

Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips

I own she has my heart enthralled

So fill to me the parting glass

Good night and joy be with you all

Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had

They're sorry for my going away

And all the sweethearts that e'er I had

They'd wish me one more day to stay

But since it falls unto my lot

That I should rise and you should not

I'll gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be with you all

Moony--

Sunshine On My Shoulders...

I had a strange assignment at work once, from the Spiritual Care Coordinator. He told me about a hospice patient who was planning his own funeral, and he wanted a slideshow presentation (PowerPoint) designed of pictures from his life.

The gentleman was young - only about 45 years old - and was dying from cancer. He was undecided about the music he wanted, but had told the Spiritual Care Coordinator about some of the music he liked - and he mentioned John Denver. But he said that I could pick whatever I thought worked - (no pressure there, right?) (Actually, I felt very honored - and humble - to be asked to work on that project.)

As I worked on the project, scanning in the photos, I noticed one common theme - almost all of the photos were of him being outside. He hunted, worked on his car, played with his dogs, fished, built his house, and even got married - outside.

I picked "Sunshine On My Shoulders" for the music - and it was so fitting. I'll never forget that project. What a memory your post brought back!

Honestly, the song that I would really pick is one by Joyful Noise. I almost lost my life in a ship at sea in the North Atlantic in what I refer to as a "Near Perfect Storm". Eighty foot seas, broke down engines, a hole in the side of the ship down in the engine room, engine crew swimming about as we flooded to near sinking capacity until we finally managed to get some pumps running to help keep us afloat. For six days straight we limped and wallowed and thrashed, got banged up physically, no sleep, and the Captains' words to me when I asked him if he thought we might sink were; "Do you know how to pray son?" And my sixteen year old scared kid's response was a frightened; "No...."

But, I did pray with what little I knew about praying, and I prayed alot. I begged God to allow us to live. And, He did. We limped into Bermuda, dropped the hook, and we all slept like logs for a day and a half.

And so, the song I choose is the one sung by Brian Bliss called "Captain of Salvation". I'd post the words, but I can't remember them all. But I do remember that when I heard that song, I was overwhelmed with thankfulness for God having saved me at sea, as well as God having SAVED me through Jesus Christ, the Captain of our Salvation...

This is a great thread, Dot!

I love reading the responses. Chas, that's a very touching story. I'm sure it was beautiful and moving. I think I want to have a keg party for my funeral, and start with "Mississippi Queen" :D

JL, you are such a great story teller! You could write a very successful, entertaining book of Mark Twain-ish short stories about all these things you've posted on here.

Why, thank you! I love to write short stories and have a bunch of them written down already. Many of them sea stories though...

Here is a possible link to one at Myspace.com I don't know if it will let you in there thoguh, but you can try. I could post it somewhere her, but maybe it wouldn't work because it has a few swear words in it. But here:

Drat. It won't work. Okay, I'll start a thread in Open

I Can See Clearly Now

Jimmy Cliff

(performed by Johnny Nash)

I can see clearly now the rain is gone

I can see all obstacles in my way

Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind

It's gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day

I think I can make it now the pain is gone

All of the bad feelin's have disappeared

Here is the rainbow I've been prayin' for

Gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day

Look all around, nothing but blue skies

look straight ahead, nothing but blue skies

I can see clearly now the rain is gone

I can see all obstacles in my way

Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind

Gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day

Gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day.

WWJLA, I'd love to hear you sing that with your angelic voice! :)

I break into that song quite frequently when the pressure breaks in various situations in life. That or Psalms 100, but I can't sing and Psalms 100 isn't very good without having enough people to do it "in the round". ;)

Toppers, which song is that? Let the Lower Lights Be Burning or My Anchor Holds? None of the above? :biglaugh:
