  1. That seems right ... i was there like Oct thru Feb, but we had little snow that year. I worked chipping frozen horse droppings off the pasture, but got to work on training the horses more the second block, and got to ride into the BLM on a regular basis. I remember riding Jerry down a trail and he took off on me, as his nautre was. I just let him gallop along for a while ... great smooth ride down the mountain trail ... he was a thoroughbred I think, used to be named Geronimo ... that part was fun. yeah, that sucks ...
  2. I feel you are wrong about this B) "This feels like bull sheet" Now, if I have actual bull sheet in my hand, that would be an accurate feeling. The emotion generated from the experience would depend on your personal feelings abouts bulls and sheet. But "feeling" has different usages. In modern usage, I think if you say "feel" instead of "think" or "believe", you are just saying it is not based on hard evidence. It is like you are not to the point of thinking it is so yet, but you have a "feeling". You are less committed than if you say you "believe" it to be so. At least that is how I feel about it. from merriam webster 4 a : to be aware of by instinct or inference b : BELIEVE, THINK I'd get out my Kittel's encyclopedia, but a couple got water logged and a couple got chewed on by mice. lol Of course TWI said we shouldn't be led by feelings, so I'm trying to see what purpose sex outside marriage served, since it couldn't have been about feelings. It must have been some sort of undershepherding technique. I feel like a beer B) And even though these are just my feelings, I feel anyone can argue with me ... they usually do. LOL I think when you say "this is how I feel", you are not saying no one can argue, you are saying it is open to debate, like " this is how I believe based on what I know to this point". Wayfers could be more absolute, like, "this is right and till you believe like me, you are going to heck in a hat basket" In ten years ... I'll be 60 ... good gawd ...
  3. We need a class action suit that would acquire Camp Gunnison as a money making place, where we ex wayfers could use it for free until we are paid back for the ABS they took under false pretenses, and the labor we invested while HQ was partying on our dime. <_< I wonder if I still have those copies of the blue forms in some box? And I want some of that gold too ... where is that buried anyway?
  4. Happy Happy Birthday David ... Have some fun .... and some cake and ice cream :D

    i'm embarrassed

You have a grip B) It's like 3 point climbing ... you have one grip here, one grip with your other friends, a grip with your family ... well ... something like that Seems to me there are some things better understood by ex wayfers or ex corps, but there are many parallels in the real world. I hung out with a bunch of Chevron/Amoco/Texaco folks after TWI and I noticed a lot of the same power struggles, infidelities, abuse of power, leaders making decisions for you ... mixed with some good people. (Of course they got paid to put up with that BS, instead of paying) This seems like a good place to philosophize about that human nature crap, which is universal I s'pose. Anyway, I don't have anything figured out, but it seems like multiple circles of social interaction is good ... and online seems to allow a different level of communication. The "family" stuff, I'm not sure what you mean. TWI tried to convince us to put them first, I don't see that here. I haven't formed any "family like" bonds here, but you have probably formed tighter connections considering the time and heart you've invested. I'd think that is worth hanging on to, at some level at least. In TWI I moved about every year for 10 years ... not sure if I was predisposed to that kind of life or what ... but longer term "friends" seems a better way to go. If this is just sort of a cultist version of AA, well then maybe that is OK too. I hope you keep being yourself here ... but not because you're my Corps "sister" ;) just 'cuz you "shoot from the hip" as they say. Your other friends would probably enjoy you "being yourself" with them too. I'm still deciding what I want my "self" to be lol ... How the hell did you figure that out? :P

    The Cone of Wilma

Hey George B) Just go ... you will get brownie points for being there if the weather is bad ... and it will be more exciting to boot ... and if you are flying .. you ARE a jet setter :) Milan ... WOW, fashion capital of the world I think ... thank God the US protects them so we can have good fashion. Even in Florida, there is a left and right. I think if your earring is in the right, you will attract gay guys ;) Unless you are REALLY ugly, or showing obvious signs of disease. :o OK, I guess that stirs the pot
  7. I was living with Dennis in Champaign when he was working on that. I used to have a hand written book of his poems too. He had a real zeal for life. Whatever happened to him? well, it was Urbana actually Illinois

    ILLINOIS

Jim went to Dallas in like '81. I think he was working in a bio research lab .. still pickin' the banjo. I have no idea since that. I lived with him in Champaign in a big way home thingy, back in '77. I'm curious what happened with him since that.

    wine making-

I'm just a novice wine maker, but the herbs are probably added to the juice. Some purists may say that isn't real wine, when you start adding stuff like that. Some wine snobs don't even like mixing grapes. Seems to me blending is a good way to get what you want though, and if herbs help, so mote it be ;) So it not only knocked your socks off, but your FEET too ... WOW. Maybe they added some peyote. I guess that could make you soar like AN eagle B)
  10. I'm betting Donna laid his clothes out for him .. she and Rosie prolly got a big kick out of it.
  11. I grew up in Quincy, IL ... they used to have the Quincy Cubs .. farm team. Half the town were Cards fans, half Cubbies ... it was fun. I was always a cards fan, but still root for the Cubbies. I root for the White Sox too, so this could be a great series ... If the Angels can come thru, all my preferred teams will have won :) life is good. But what the hell, life is good anyway B) Man ... 18 innings One more tonight ... weeee
  12. Thanks ... those look like some young vines, 2nd year maybe (or second leaf, as they say) ... I bought some Norton wine from somewhere in Virginia once ... Horton Norton maybe? Or am I thinking of the elephant? :) TCat, thanks for your message too, I missed it earlier B) :P B) :D Thanks Nika And I didn't even have to stand up with all the other birthday boys and girls :)

    Lesbianism

I'd never heard that, but she could fit the profile I guess. Has anyone else verified that? Like maybe, knew her lesbian lovers? Her sister Teresa was 11th Corps I think, she seemed straight. What was the story on Craig and Donna getting married, did VP set that up? Regarding Allan, he has to be a troll, or he is a joke, even if he is serious. Don't feed the trolls.

    Autumn Days !!

Great shots. Are these pics from this year in Canada, Cowgirl? Our leaves haven't even started to change yet in central Illinois.
  15. I actually blocked my "safe room" window like you described when I stayed thru a storm in New Orleans once. These guys probably knew what they were doing, just didn't make sense to me. Belle, that is pretty funny about the Ole Miss bumper sticker :D
  16. Just for fun, I'll have to question snopes on this one, and the ag owner explanation. JUST FOR FUN :) Snopes quotes the guy ... "Our windows will not support the weight of plywood screwed into their frames — neither is there sufficient masonry wall surrounding them for an attachment — therefore our contractor a "good Ag" suggested saving the store from a major cleanup and letting the glass go — it wasn't a difficult decision to make! " First, before this quote, snopes calls the sheets of OSB "boards", so I think they have no idea. Second, if the frames didn't support the "plywood", how did they attach it to the inside? If it is somehow attached at top and bottom only, a wind that would break the windows would break the OSB also. Third, I can understand them not wanting to put holes in their frames, but it sure seems a bunch of sheet metal screws would hold the OSB in place, especially if the weight was born by the ledge. Also, winds would push the boards against the frames on the outside, whereas they would rip right off the screws on the inside, unless they did major construction to bolster the OSB on the inside. If they were going to that much trouble, why not do it on the outside and save $3000 of glass? Fourth, why don't any of the other hundreds of people that have similiar frames have to put their OSB on the inside? It wasn't a difficult decision for the guy, but it doesn't seem like the correct decision, either. Unless maybe he had scratched or etched glass that he hoped insurance would replace for him, or he just didn't want to put holes in the frames. Anyway, that's how I see it, and I'm not afraid to be wrong B)
  17. I'd rather see Cleveland in there for the wild card ... their salary comes to like 40 mil versus 190 or so for the Yankers. But Cleveland has been faltering

    Answer me this...

:P no, I was not the least bit serious, I do like the way you think ... it was just light hearted banter, at least I laughed. :) I guess by the wink you are kidding? Anyway, it was just having fun, OK? I mean of course if there was enough air blowing it would go uphill, but why would we introduce that into the equation? I need to see why there would be spin ... maybe I need less wine ?
  19. rhino

    Answer me this...

hmmmm, not at top or bottom, I assume the axis you speak of is parallel to the plane and perpendicular to the slope, in other words, just like it was rolling down WITH friction. I don't DO aerodynamics or fluid mechanics, but without the plane, it seems the air would act equally and cause no spin. The plane would maybe compress air underneath, possibly reducing air pressure under (perpendicular to the plane) the ball but since it is a ball, not a wing, I don't know if there is a net change. I'd guess not. so maybe the speed it achieves down the slopes is the same as the speed it achieves in freefall. Now either I'm missing something here, or you need to be aware that the MJ they sell now is a LOT stronger than in the 70's. :D But really, how can the ball move uphill, unless it has a paraglider attached and a nice updraft? I'll wait for a certified ME to show up with the correct answers for this and the relativity thingy. I like the thread though.
  20. rhino

    Answer me this...

Nothing unusual happens, the lights go off. At least if you are less than the speed of light, everything seems normal. You would supposedly acquire infinite mass AT the speed of light, though I'm not sure that MAKES you light. But relativity says the speed of light is the same for all reference points. So AT the speed of light the lights go off, but time stands still. LOL It means you have infinite mass and there is no time ... you are God :)
  21. This is my 3rd time, but I don't put a lot of effort into making it. I just check the sugar and then let it go. I rack once if I get to it lol. I'll see how this batch turns out around spring ... swapping would be fun, but prolly not worth the shipping till we develop our skills. I've learned that the lower quality stuff is not bad mixed with orange or red soda :P I have about 45 gallons going now. I may try making beer too, one of these days ...
  22. Wow ... I won a prize ... is there cash involved? a trophy? LOL Thanks laleo ... I spent a lot of time watching CNN for the video, but the commentary often was nothing but story telling. They had a story line and a political agenda, facts be damned. It's still hard to piece it all together ... the story of the "ghost cops" is interesting and sounds typical of New Orleans. http://www.thedeadpelican.com/COMPASS.HTM I still haven't seen a real great accounting of what actually happened with all the levees and flood walls. http://www.hq.usace.army.mil/cepa/katrina/pumps/pumps.html When you look at all the breaks there, it seems obvious that the levees were just overwhelmed with a huge surge, apparently from Lake Borgne. I saw an Army Corps guy on one morning saying how a 10 mile stretch of levee was basically wiped out, and it was far beyond anything they had ever expected. CNN never replayed that segment. lol That map doesn't show any breaks in New Orleans East, yet it was flooded. There was a story about these levees, and how they had "sunk" like 300% to 5000% more than anticipated, and Bush cuts kept them from being maintained, ie. it's Bush's fault. You have to read the fine print to discover that 5000% only made them about a foot, maybe two lower than expected at certain points. Creative jounalism at it's worst. I think there is more afoot here than sloppy journalism ... A police chief tries to cover his arse with wild stories, the reporters are anxious for their headline, bada bing bada boom. They must have had camera crews in the convention center since they kept showing one or two bodies ... I think many deliberately ignored what they saw and ran with the bigger headline. It is despicable but not surprising that so many New Orleans officials and the teams they put together proved to be incompetent. At first it seemed good that so many are resigning, but I am somewhat irritated that they are probably walking out more because they don't want to face the mess that they left behind. There are plenty of politicians already snorting up to the trough for that $200 billion though, and public service is pretty far down on their list of priorities. But the real story is about the majority of people in flooded areas that looked out for their neighbors, manned the pumps, used their fishing boats for rescues, those are the real New Orleans Saints. :)
  23. B) Thanks folks ... looks like a lot of folks here are right around the half century mark ... Maybe because so many of us spent part of our 20's pursuing our youthful ideals ... and ending up for a time in TWI, during their hay days. (or was it hazed & dazed?) Then for me, somehow another 20 years flew by after leaving that. About 15 of that I spent cleaning windows, playing volleyball, drinking beer, shooting pool ... not bad overall. Then the mid life change ... back to live near the old home town, build my little place in the country, grow some grapes, make some wine, maybe farmers' market ... God is good :D It's been good chatting with some of you ... and it will be fun to discuss where people have gone since "escaping" twi. Still a nice long journey lies ahead ...
  24. Hey Nika ... It's because that picture is 25 years old B) Well, it is probably five, I'll get one more current sometime, but I look like that still. The trick is to drink beer on a daily basis and stay single, but what fun is that? OK, it was kinda fun ... but I sorta envy you married folks with kiddoes. I have a fear of heights though, and was terrible at climbing on LEAD ... too lanky I guess. I've only figured out who Tom Strange and Tom Tuttle are so far, oh, and Simon. But I could be gravely mistaken. I guess I'll get to you other guys eventually. :) Even Igot's pic didn't help.

    Google Earth.com

Google earth says you need a broadband connection. You can google 'microsoft terraserver' for some pretty good satellite imagery also, for us poor dial up users. The google site says you can even switch to a angled view to give more of a 3D look. Sounds neat.
