It appears that the storm is leaving Florida now and should be long gone by tonight. Hang in there, guys (and gals)! George

And it's taken over four days to post a new one. George

Pirate? Your turn! George

Frankie and the 4 headlined an Oldies show in Houston a few years ago. Still going strong! Enjoy, Excie! George

Happy Birthday "dmiller"
GeorgeStGeorge replied to ChattyKathy's topic in Birthdays and Anniversaries
Glad I got back in time to see this thread. Happy 50th, David! (I'll be joining you soon enough!) George -
Well, Wilma stayed away long enough to let me and my brother enjoy the reception and to visit with our Italian cousins. Actually, the weather in Sarasota was pretty fair during the weekend. Now that I'm back, I'm praying that the rest of you avoid any severe unpleasantness. (It appears that the storm will pass quickly through Florida.) George

I can find recordings of Ella doing "Paper Moon"; but none of them seem to be with Benny. George

Hey, Excie! Maybe I'm the only one who read your post and didn't get the impression that you were leaving GS. I just got the impression that you realize that you can't "hide" here. That's true. Hopefully, you can be as straight with people in the "real world" as you are in cyberspace. You do have friends here, though; and you will be missed if you leave. George

It seems now that Wilma won't be visiting Florida until late Sunday or early Monday, so I guess I'll be able to make the reception after all. Present "cones" don't even have tropical storm force winds hitting Florida until maybe Sunday. I'm glad the reception isn't in Cancun! George

I know I've heard this (and fairly recently); but I don't know title or artist. George

Best guess...Ella Fitzgerald. George

"Runaway" by Del Shannon. It's tough when you try to pick a song that someone will get without making it too easy. "Well, the weeks went by and spring turned to summer and summer faded into the fall and it turns out he was a missin' person who nobody missed at all!" George

Apparently not as challenging as I'd hoped. "Stars and Stripes Forever" is correct. (Wonderful flick staring Clifton Webb, with a big role for a young Robert Wagner.) George

Growing up in the north Chicago suburbs, I saw my share of Cubs games (and one or two Sox games). Back then (the 60's) the Cubs DID have a team you could care about: Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Randy Hundley, Fergie Jenkins, Ron Santo, et al. And the park does have charm. Baseball played the way it should be: on grass, during the day. I was horrified when they put lights in, caving to TV. It may not happen in my lifetime, of course; but if the Cubs ever make the World series, you still couldn't pay me to see a night game there. Wrigley Field (love that name -- I don't mind it being the name of a company as long as it's not a utility -- what is it they're calling Comiskey these days) is one of the few parks I've seen games in that is still being used, unlike Candlestick Park, Comiskey (the original), the Astrodome. Before I forget, I think another reason that the Cubs had a big following is that WGN broadcast almost ALL the games (not just away games). It didn't matter that the park wasn't sold out, you could stil watch about 150 Cubs games a year on TV. George

I'll probably decide about noon tomorrow (Thursday) what to do. If Wilma hangs around in the Caribbean long enough, or if the track moves more southward (Come on, cold front!) I'll give it a shot. Right now, though, it looks like a Cat 2 storm hitting south FL late Saturday. I don't think I want to be there for that. :o George Rhino, have you been using nasal spray again?

Kathy, that picture just "cracked" me up!!! :D :D :D George

All right, if for no other reason than to keep this tread from sinking into oblivion. Hopefully, this will be a challenge, but solvable. George

Not made of green cheese but ... PAPER?? The jazz band I play with does a version of this as well. George And while I'm a fan of Benny Goodman, I always thought Artie Shaw was better. :D

Actually, the bride and groom were married in Milan a couple weeks ago. (My cousin is Italian. She's been living in the US for a few years now.) They're just having a reception in Florida for the non-jet-setters among us. More to the point: what's the likelihood that the reception will be held in a hurricane shelter? George

The last four lines seem vaguely familiar, but I can't place it. I think part of the problem is that we seem to be losing players. Belle? Sharon? Others? George

Okay, here's the deal. I have a wedding reception to attend in Sarasota on Saturday, so I plan to fly into Tampa on Friday and leave Sunday. How far south does the storm have to go to leave Sarasota relatively safe? (I don't mind a bunch of rain, but I won't be there if there's a likely problem from storm surge or high wind.) Is there a "clean side" to a storm in Florida? The south and west sides of storms hitting the Texas shoreline are much better than the north and east sides, due to the counterclockwise rotation of the storm.. For example, Rita brought only a little rain and minimum hurricane force winds to my home south of Houston; but Louisiana got hit pretty hard. I have a feeling that because Florida is so narrow there is no "clean" side. George

That was one. The other (a bit obscure) is the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Okay, I'm done. (Before Chatty Kathy starts calling me "Mr. Focused" again.) George

I don't know about disinterest (though I have seen a drop-off in posts on this thread as well as Name that Tune and Movie Pictionary), it could be that no one knows the movie! Without googling, all I know is that it's an old movie about a submarine. In fact, when you mentioned a special effects oscar nomination, I thought of "Ice Station Zebra"; but that's too recent (mid-60's as I recall). So, how about "Sink the Bismark"? George

Here's another: Syracuse Orangemen. Or are they the "Orange" now for PC purposes? Either way, it still works. There are at least two more I can think of. George
