  1. Ellen Barkin The Big Easy Dennis Quaid (Raf, thanks for explaining why the name "Slaghoople" has been floating thru my brain this morning. That's the Liz Taylor link you used.)
  2. Clicking up to the top for easy reference.
  3. Wow. An eyewitness account to the bot ADMITTING to the attempted murder of Ricardo Caballero. A man SAW them ADMIT to responsibility and complicity. Wow. A man who wasn't there calls him a liar. He claims there was "no proof other than hearsay from Geer", despite the PUBLIC ADMISSION OF GUILT OF THE ACCUSED. In a court of law, that's admissible as EVIDENCE and may convict the accused all by itself. (Selective reading skipped the PUBLIC ADMISSION OF GUILT OF THE ACCUSED. Then again, selective reading is the modus operandi of some people....) Then he suggested that-since it wasn't reported in the books of others who might not have been present- that it didn't happen. He also said it never came up in Waydale or the GSC. However, Pawtucked HIMSELF confirms this has been discussed, albeit not by the eyewitnesses. That means that the eyewitnesses TALKED TO OTHERS, who passed it along. So, that means there have been quite a few "peeps" over the years, as the result of the absence of a Conspiracy of Silence. So, then, given that this has come up before, and we have an eyewitness account, where then does this objection come from? Is it the Cylon BaseStar of denial? Or just plain doo-doo bulldookey? (Or-just maybe-both?)
  4. I'm narrowing this thread because, apparently, so much happened this year. I'm looking for the events of and about 1976. Yes, that will include 1975 and 1977 to a degree. However, I'd like the ones ABOUT 1976, whether or not they were actually IN 1976. So, please share all memories, no matter how fuzzy or "trivial". To help jog your memory, here's some events from US history and twi history... In 1975, "Jesus Christ is Not God" is published. "Saturday Night Live" begins airing on tv. Microsoft is founded. April 30, 1975. South Vietnam falls to Communist forces of North Vietnam. Attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford. In 1976, campuses are purchased in Rome City, Indiana ("the College of Biblical Research") and Gunnison, Colorado ("the Way Family Ranch-Camp Gunnison.") July 4, 1976, the US celebrates the 200th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence with its Bicentennial celebrations. 1976, the Concorde begins flying Paris-NYC trips. 1976, the G6 is founded. In 1977, the PFAL '77 is done live at Ball State University. According to the memorial, in 1977, Howard Allen and "Uncle" Harry Wierwille were installed as Trustees on the Board of Trustees. In 1977, Volume 4 of Studies in Abundant Living was published. 1977, the Apple II is released. 1977, "Saturday Night Fever" comes out. The Atari 2600 VCS is released. The modem is invented. (Gerald Ford was US President 1974-1977) ========== Ok, the Bicentennial..... what happened?
  5. Many of us still believe that. ...after exposure to twi "leadership training." That doesn't tell you anything? Because it wasn't ONLY about the money-it was about CONTROL. The humiliation was social sanctions imposed to try to force conformity. They didn't want your money without your loyalty. They wanted your blind loyalty and strict obedience FIRST. Then the money is incidental, and they can jack up the ABS to any level LATER. That's simple sociology. And you KEPT coming back? It's only a question of WHEN.... The top leaders keep steering the ship for the jagged cliffs. The local leaders can make the deck events fantastic, but can't change that, and can't change the course-heading. Today they are.
  6. Harry had it cupped in his hand at the time-the camera showed it. Ok, I can see that working. I wonder if the deleted scenes have something on that.... Once Belle said that, all I could picture was the Nora Desmond imitation. I'm unable to sit and watch Sunset Blvd because I keep hearing her scream "MAAAXXXX!!" when I try. Madame Maxime's name WAS taken from the word "maximum" (some variation of it) and so I would have accepted "curvy" in some degree or another- voluptuous or whatever- but THIN just didn't fly. This surprised me because I never bothered to follow up on the casting decisions so I didn't know what the actors looked like. I imagine we missed a number of scenes between them where this went back and forth, same as in the book. Either that, or Beaxbatons was such a wussy school that their top student STILL was only so good. I liked it a lot better than the third movie. Whatever happened to Mad-Eye's motto: "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" and the references to never trusting his food and drink to not be drugged or whatever? It explained the hip flask quite nicely...
  7. I think the saying is something like that. I do know that someone broke that rule once, and Stanslavski (founder of "the Method" of "Method Acting") used that as an example of what NOT to do. IIRC, in the movie, Neville gets nudged up to Harry, Harry and Neville have their discussion, and the scene immediately shifts to the next day, with Harry and Neville walking and talking, and Harry has the gillyweed PALMED. From then on, Harry's in full public view. Moody makes a comment to him about taking the gillyweed just before the start signal is given, but doesn't hand over anything. (And EVERYONE was watching the 4 champions.) ==== In the movie, Neville TELLS him about gillyweed, and Moody knows Neville told him, but there's no specific reference to how it got into Harry's hand. We know where it CAME from because Snape later confirmed his stores were missing gillyweed. So, it was in Snape's supplies, and then it was in Harry's hand. How it got from Point A to Point B was never specified. Did Harry have the time and skill to burgle the supplies at night or early in the morning? Neville's not good enough to handle a break-in (yet if ever).
  8. He made that comment about white blood cells at least one other place and time. (Possibly ROA '77 which was on Healing.) I challenge his explanation on how white blood cells work. They don't "keep hitting an invader until it's pushed out", they disintegrate it by attacking cell by cell. Then again, why did he think he knew anything about MEDICINE in the first place?
  9. *catches up to the thread* Nuts, I was going to guess "Time Bandits". The lasers thing sounded familiar. Ditto the Robin Hood and bedroom. Oh, well. ==== I'm confident I've seen the current one, but my memory isn't kicking up the name or scene.
  10. After the previous mention of the Foe-Glass, not seeing its use for a moment towards the end was a lapse. I'm a little disappointed in the casting for Madame Maxime. She was supposed to have the same body-type as Hagrid. Ron greeted hearing her comments about being "big-boned" as "only thing that's got bigger bones than her is a dinosaur" in the book. Most characters are cast to look like they do in the book. I'm not sure what message they MEANT to send with the casting choice, but I'd sure I don't like it either way. I liked the entrance of the Durmstrang team, but found the entrance of Beauxbatons disappointing. In fact, Fleur's supposed to be at least BRAVER than she was depicted. As it stands, that school doesn't seem like it has much to offer-its TOP student didn't seem terribly competent. The incident at the World Cup was well-done, IMHO. I would have preferred to see the match itself, complete with the mascots, but I can see why they left it out-which meant they had to leave out "the weighing of the wands". (The veelah references.) Too bad-I wanted to see John Hurt return as Ollivander. I at LEAST wanted to see the teams introduced. What was with Dumbledore's comment before the maze? From his perspective, it doesn't make much sense. I also missed Amos Diggory's dig to Cedric about Cedric beating Harry, and Cedric making little of the comment. I also missed the commentary on the first challenge- "Are you watching this, Mister Krum?" And the guesses of what the clue to the second challenge meant. "I thought it sounded like Percy singing. Maybe you have to attack him while he's in the shower, Harry." "You're going to face the Cruciatis Curse!" Anybody know why both guest-schools suddenly became one-gender? I liked Dobby's role in the 2nd trial in the book- and how not EVERY plan goes EXACTLY as planned. (How DID he get the gillyweed in the movie, then?) I was sure they would skip the Age Line. Nice to see I was proven wrong. I liked this one a lot more than the last one, overall. The invites to the ball didn't go EXACTLY as I expected, but they handled it just fine. (And gave Alan Rickman a good scene. :) ) Also nice to see Angelina Johnson was cast correctly. Due to an apparent misunderstanding, she was Caucasian in the first movie. (Seems JKR neglected to mention her description in the first book, and everyone presumed the same thing I did. Lee Jordan almost had the same problem-but they corrected that before casting started. Good thing-he was too visible as the Quidditch match announcer in Book 1 to avoid notice if he was cast wrong.) This time around, they even got the hair right. Anyone spot the copy of the book "Flying with the Cannons" when the Golden Trio was on the Hogwarts Express?
  11. I thought it was time for another trip down Amnesia Lane...
  12. I'll be glad for anything you share. Ok, you were IN the Corps and heard NOTHING about it, no "if you're willing to take it" bs. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm trying not to judge those who indulged too harshly, since I don't know what social pressures were brought to bear. As to "predisposition", it appears as if this was like a number of things with twi, that people who were likely "candidates" were prescreened, and that those who were more likely to go along were the ones that were approached. We DO know who started this talk (we have an eyewitness account on the twi-Wonderland thread.) I wish we had a copy of the "screening criteria", that would be a fascinating read.... Seems that the twigs, in your area and at that time, didn't see that sort of thing going on amongst them.
  13. Ahem. I called for EVERYTHING, no matter how small it seems to you, so long as it falls in the timeframe, and you don't type full names so search engines don't register the name. It may seem small to you, but be the missing piece to SOMEONE here.
  14. Just for curiousity, was Navigator a Christian group like Lighthouse? I noticed the Christians J*hn and D*rcie weren't into spouse-swapping, but, then again, they hadn't gone into the Corps yet. That may be connected. (Or it may not.)
  15. Do you honestly think that lcm wouldn't have just manufactured an excuse if an excuse wasn't already at hand? He made up the "Word is over the World" thing out of NOWHERE! One painting became a segment in his class and a doctrine about original sin!
  16. Now, see, that's something us later arrivals may not necessarily have HEARD. In the interests of fairness, I'd like a corroborating account from ANOTHER poster. Did anyone else see that sort of thing 1974-1975? Anyone heard that sort of thing 1974-1975? (Remember you can tell me anonymously..) There's something ELSE I missed. Illuminati? Anyone? I can't wait to compare accounts of THIS announcement to lcm's announcement that the Word was over the whole world in the 90s.... I'm going to ask EVERYONE who was in during the Bicentennial to share on it in the next thread...looks like we'll be spending a lot of time there. (Thanks for the early warning. I WAS planning on cutting the following threads to 5-year blocks, with 2 threads per decade.) What about these conspiracy theories, everyone? Someone mentioned the John Birch Society once. Then there's the Marxist Minstrels, and some of that stuff. PLEASE continue ALL your stories, no matter who or what. (Just mind giving out full names, as usual.) Please share what you remember with the rest of us. Impurities? Pineapple? Please explain.
  17. Anything and everything you'd like to share with everyone, except full names. I do not know what I'll find, nor do I have expectations. I'm trying to fill in the details the best I can. Observations about local activities, state-wide activities, national activities, comments made on tape, anything. Observations on local stuff plus House of Acts would help.Even using the twi-released stuff, the timeline is inconsistent and incomplete on that in particular, and it seems to be important. And did you actually call hq "Valhalla" or was that just this post? Thanks. I'll begin correcting my timeline on that the best I can, the next iteration of it. :) BTW, what year were the House of Acts Christians muscled out of things? When were H33fn3r and D00p shown the door? Hm. The Life Magazine article was on something that could be considered breaking news. Interesting.
  18. Then you know more than I do, there. I'm trying to construct a more complete picture of the ENTIRE history of the organization. Each person's experience was different, but I'd like a more complete picture of the ENTIRE time so anyone who wants can get a grounds-eye-view of what happened. And yes, where there are trends, this will help make them clearer, but I'm looking for EVERYTHING, not just the trends. 1975 in Houston, 1 Corps grad. 1975 in Houston, no power struggles, no hq heavy involvement. ROA was egalitarian-everybody shared. Bible study, PFAL and other classes, period. When we cover the late 70s, I'd love to hear the '78 story. I want to do this one thread at a time so the threads don't get confused with each other.
  19. Correct! And I didn't even have to go to my second quote! Go, Sharon.
  20. Hello. I'm asking for anyone who joined or was in contact with twi in the years starting with their membership explosion. I'm setting the target years for this thread to begin just before the earliest members of the explosion, to before the US Bicentennial. Due to so many events and recollections for the time-frame, I'm cutting it before 1976. I'm hoping this will help keep stories focused better so people won't get lost. Those of you around then, please share ANY and ALL observations, no matter how insignificant you think they are. They may prove invaluable to the rest of us. ===== Here's a rough timeframe of some events in this time-period.... We begin in 1967. According to the 198 memorial booklet timeline, 1967 is when "Are the Dead Alive Now?" was published, and PFAL was filmed. Birth control pills became available in 1967, as were early legal abortions for cause. According to TW:LIL, 1967 was vpw's trip to the House of Acts and the Haight-Ashbury area, and his recruiting some Christians there for his organization. According to the memorial, his trip there was in 1968. In 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated. As of 1969, sizeable numbers of young people had joined twi from both coasts. In 1969, vpw pushed out the Christians from the House of Acts, and demanded authority be from hq only, and money would go there only. In 1969 was the Zero Corps. (Later years produced the numbered Corps.) 1969 was Woodstock, at Max Yazger's farm in Bethel, NY. 1969 was when the first astronauts walked on the moon. In 1970, Life Magazine published "the Groovy Christians of Rye", on the Rye "beachhead" at Rye, NY (near Rye's Playland). In 1970, Ohio National Guardsmen open fire on a war protest at Kent State University, killing 4 students who became known as the Kent State 4. ("Four dead in Ohio.") In 1971, Time Magazine did one page on vpw. In 1971, vpw began his WOW Ambassador program, complete with hand-signal. According to his memorial, 1971 was when the Orange Book (PFAL) was published. (Leonard's class plus Bullinger's "How to Enjoy the Bible".) In 1971, various pamphlets called "Studies in Abundant Living" are collated and printed as Volumes 1,2, and 3 of "Studies in Abundant Living". 1972 is the Watergate scandal under Nixon. 1973 is the first Arab Oil Embargo, which limits gas and prices skyrocket. 1973, Roe vs Wade makes abortions generally legal. 1973, Ford becomes vice-president. In 1974, Emporia College in Emporia, Kansas is bought. It is renamed "the Way College of Emporia." Despite an absence of accreditation, licensed professors, and a school "library" composed ENTIRELY of used textbooks donated by way members, it is put forth as if it is a normal, accredited college. 1974, Ford becomes president. 1974, the US is in its worst recession since the Great Depression. In 1975, "Jesus Christ is Not God" is published. (This is the last book put together by vpw, unless you count Vol 4 in Studies in Abundant Living.) (We cut off this thread in 1975.) In 1976, campuses are purchased in Rome City, Indiana ("the College of Biblical Research") and Gunnison Colorado ("Camp Gunnison-the Way Family Ranch.") ==== Please note, if you need to be anonymous, you can pm it to me and I can take the information and put it in my vocabulary and writing style. Otherwise, please post directly here. (Hm. 1965 was when cigarettes were REQUIRED to have the Surgeon General warning.)
