I have a friend who, years ago, became involved with Young Ljfe. She then left them to become part of one of their splinters.(I won't name it for lack of permission to do so.) This group was very into control. They dictated who you could date, marry, socialize with and even dictated when it was permissible (or not) to have children. The life style was communal and sounded quite similar to a Way home. Sound familiar? They too, were convinced their take on things was the only correct viewpoint. We compare cult notes from time to time and the similarities are just downright creepy. So yeah, there definately are groups beside TWI that sanction an attitude of superiority.

Karmicdebt There is a very large GLBT community in the Columbus, Ohio area. Beautiful historic homes on quaint brick streets, art galleries, terrific restaurants, and a vibrant night life. Still, the crime rate is deceptively appalling. Why? I haven't the slightest clue. Point being, if you visited this area you would probably be impressed with its outward appearance. Behind the facade, however, hides a completely different world. I'll bet WG knows exactly where I'm talking about because it is not too far from her former employer.

WG Would that restaurant happen to be Buns', where the motto is "Dine here, diet at home"? Never cared much for Delaware myself but then my experience was tempered by the Fellowlaborer program. Used to be it was a 20 minute trip to Columbus. What is it today, about a day and a half? I live on the far east side now and the area is very ethnically and racially diverse. The adults seem to have adapted well to the mix as have the younger kids. Tensions at the high school level, though,are running at an all time high. Part of that (IMO) is due to the new dress code that was to HELP the problem. (The overcrowding doesn't help either.) The dress code is not universally enforced for fear that doing so might be viewed as racial bias. This isn't a problem the kids created but they know how to play the system. We used to have a really low crime rate until Wal-Smart decided to build right beside the interstate. There is a direct correlation that can be seen here by simply looking at statistics and ignoring any personal bias that might taint the facts. Anybody else experienced this phenomenon? Now about the French. It wouldn't matter if you spoke the language perfectly, They would still hold you in contempt simply because you are American. edited to add a word-----Oh, no! that's one of the dreaded downfall steps!

I don't have any scriptures to back this but then again I'm not saying anybody should blindly accept it. Here's my take on it. All three are mixed together like a marble cake. Throw in heart and soul too if you like. It might just jazz up the recipe. Now if a marble cake is baked correctly, no one flavor will out balance the other. With the new birth, however, the spirit takes on a place of dominance and becomes more pronounced than the other ingredients.( kinda like cream rising to the top in raw milk) That's just the way I see it. I could be way off base Dang, that made me hungry!

I don't remember the exact wording but I remember the context in which it was presented. Early in the PFAL class, VPW is talking about how people read around the Word and about The Word but often fail to actually read The Word itself. He talks about how various denominations use what are known as "daily devotionals", known also as "aids to devotion". Some of these devotionals are free standing and some are cummulative in the way they are presented. These are sections of scripture that you make your theme for the day. Wierwille ridiculed this approach and said we should let the Holy Spirit( or was that *holy spirit*?) dictate what we read,study and teach. Obviously, this programmed approach is exactly what became the norm in TWI as time progressed and everything became tightly controlled. So to partially answer your question, he was not saying that The Word is not helpful as an aid to your devotion, he was saying that The Word is not an "aid to devotion">(ie: a prepackaged lesson plan) I no longer have my PFAL book(Funny story there) but maybe someone who does can help you a bit more.

But if you do, remember that brown shoes don't make it. (Just ask Susie Creamcheese.)

I'm sure most of us who sat through PFAL remember how this verse was handled. VPW taught that your "name" represents everything related to you . Therefore God magnified the Word(considered it more important) above everything else related to Him. A modern day translation might be that "nothing is more important than the Word" The problem with this is that it assumes that people in an ancient culture assigned the same significance to the word "name" as VPW said it has in this time we are currently in. Maybe they did. Maybe they didn't. I don't personally know. I don't honestly have the skills and know-how to accurately research that question. I think, though, that to do an honest study of that question, one would have to use an array of tools that were not part of the PFAL class. Remember the "lambano" example? It went something like: Lambano---lamballo ----ballo ----ball ----throw--- throw it out ----throw it outward------manifest----SIT!!! How's that for a scholarly approach to defining a word? <_<

Lone Wolf Heck, I didn't even know about what was going on with the guys much less with the gals. :blink: I do know of one incident in particular where a female WC grad (Area Leader) had her designs set on a particular male subordinate. She constantly manipulated schedules and circumstances to ensure that she would be alone with him. This would have been in about 1977 or 1978. He was married and had a child. His wife was furious about the situation. The AL being discussed tried to use the situation to leverage her upward mobility in the organization. He was not the least bit interested in this particular woman and that really insulted her. She eventually got reasigned to another area and that was the end of the story. I didn't place any significance on it that would have been unique to The Way. At the time, I saw it as the same type of thing that happens in countless other organizations. I'm confident this kind of thing probably happened elsewhere because that is part of human nature. But then again, I'm not the brightest bulb in the lamp when it comes to recognizing this type of thing.

Man, this just shows how powerful music can be. It can really eat away at your psyche. The band had one stinkin' hit and yet the lyrics still keep floatin' around in our minds. BTW-----There was a Way album by the same title as this song.
