  1. Garth: quote: Come on, Johniam, you mean to tell me you can't reason better than that? You mean to tell me that you actually agree with Roy boy that the sovereignty of God has to be officially recognized as part of/propagated by the state? Hey, man. I'm coming to Atlanta. I'm going to knock on your door like those wayfers and ask you if you'll sign a petition making it law that all public buildings must display a 10 commandments sticker affixed to the main entrance door. Thanks! I knew I could count on you.
  2. Yes, any BOD member could do that. LCM always said that the logical heart felt proper response to God's love and grace is to serve Him, meaning, go WOW, go Corps, and everything else they wanted to guilt us into doing. Aren't you guys doing exactly the same thing? You believe that the logical heart felt proper response to finding out VPs sins is to shun TWI and everything about them past present and future. Since Oldies won't do it, he's a "cop out" isn't he?
  3. Song: quote: I just prefer to call God God and not attach a penis or vagina. God is called the Father of lights, the Father of spirits, and the Father of other things in scripture. He doesn't have a penis; He's the Lifegiver.
  4. You guys're just putting words in Oldies' mouth. Any BOD member could do that!
  5. Consent of the governed? So, if I, the governed, consent to the 10 commandments being on govt property it's OK. Works for me.
  6. Abigail: quote: Expecting basic morality and human decency from those who "talk about God" is a far cry different than expecting perfection. I don't think any of us expected the latter, but we damned well ought to expect the former. True, but if someone throws the baby out with the bath water that says to me that they WERE expecting not just moral and human decency, but perfection. The honest thing would be for me to say "Yeah! That's right! I threw the baby out with the bath water and right now I'm comfortable with that. I don't care who doesn't like it!" But if I'm not sure there isn't a real baby in there, it's going to bug me from time to time...like when somebody starts a confrontational thread like this???? You know who you are.
  7. Go Cards! Sorry wyteduv. I think Albert Pujols should be NL MVP this year. One of the main criticisms of him last year was that during the 5 game series at Wrigley in which the Cubs won 4 games, AP didn't make a very strong showing. Not this year. In the last game the two teams played this year, at Wrigley, AP went 5 for 5 including 3 homers in a game the Cards trailed 8-2 at one time and eventually won 11-8. And it was he who got the GW hit in last night's game. If he doesn't get MVP I just hope it isn't Bonds again. No offense, Mark S.
  8. Geo: quote: where does "free will" enter into anything? So where do my kids' free will enter into the fact that we named them before they were born? Quote: If you're called out "before the foundations of the world" (and your a$$hole neighbor isn't), what then do you have to say in the matter? And what could you possibly have done to earn the blessing? And what could your neighbor have possibly done to NOT earn it? It all happened eons before you were even thought of. You have nothing to say in the matter. That's God's job, not yours. What if your boss decides to promote you and fire your a**hole co worker? What do you have to say in THAT matter? What could your co worker have possibly done to NOT earn it? You might have SOME knowledge in that matter, but you have NONE of what God might do. Keep your day job. God doesn't need consultants.
  9. Song: John 3:16 - For God so loved that He gave.... You got a problem with that?
  10. I believe TWI taught the word. My parents weren't the only people who ever produced a child and they certainly weren't perfect, but they were the ones who produced ME! Similarly, TWI aren't the only ones who ever taught God's word to anyone, but they were the ones who taught ME! It's OK to expect perfection from God, but never from people. Why doesn't this simple concept sink in? Why do we have to expect perfection from people just because said people talk about God?
  11. If God's really all knowing, all powerful, everywhere present, and all love? Yeah! I think He could pull that off.
  12. Raf: I'm going to do what the Moody Blues song says, "keep on thinking free"!
  13. Not much of a splash. In fact it was Oct 5 of 1994, 10 years ago tomorrow that we left. But they pretty much wanted people to leave by then. Hopefully we've all made a "splash" by the impact GSC has had.
  14. Wayfernot: Just curious. Did they do either 'I'll wait" or "Beautiful girls"? Those two songs in particular I can NOT picture Sammy singing. But I'll bet there's more Sammy songs that David wouldn't try.
  15. Most people I know who homeschool let their kids go to public HS but homeschool during the younger years. We don't homeschool, but it seems like there are disadvantages to either side.
  16. Go Cards. Actually, I can't let myself get too hyped now; they're playing like an ordinary team lately. The Astros seem like the team to beat right now, at least in the NL. Cubs're down to their last strike. I'm guessing 1st round in the NL will be Cards/Dodgers and Braves/Astros. Anaheim is making a serious bid in the AL; one more win and they're in. Hmmm. Yanks/Twins and Redsox/Angels. Don't count the Twins out. In 1987 the two best teams in baseball during the regular season were the Tigers and Blue Jays (98 and 96 wins respectively). Those two teams played 7 one run games over the last 10 regular season games and tired each other out, so the Twins (85 wins would've been 4th place in the AL east) easily beat the Tigers in the ALCS and eventually won the world series. ANYTHING could still happen. I'm hoping that Pujols, Rolen, and Edmonds collective playoff experience will kick in this year though. Go Cards!
  17. I think it may be impossible to FOCUS on more than one thing at a time, but everybody multi tasks. Consider LBJ's summation of Gerald Ford: that he couldn't march and chew gum at the same time. That wouldn't be funny if we couldn't multi task. Whenever I'm driving and have to go between two objects (usually 2 parked cars) I first decide that I CAN make it safely between them. Then I focus on the driver's side and make sure I clear it by a few inches only, depending on just how tight the squeeze is. Ideally, I'd try to watch both sides of the car, but that's impossible, so the next best thing is the above mentioned formula. Haven't hit anything yet. That's why I say perhaps it's impossible to focus on 2 things at once.
  18. Yeah, that Sharapova girl looks like the girl Archie would date to make Betty and Veronica jealous.
  19. What ever happened to Insurgent? He'd know first hand.
  20. I LOVE Ron Luciano's books. Saw him ump a game in 1978. He was the 1st base ump and when he'd call them out at 1st he's shoot them. Yeah, Weaver was advanced class material all right.
  21. Cynic: quote: Scripture attests that Jesus Christ is God Yeah! TWISTED sister, er, scripture!
  22. quote: I no longer feel a need to glean truths from them, but I know that VPW did, and I receive from him what he got from trinitarians. Probably most (if not all) of his teachers believed that Jesus was God. I've posted this before, but IMO many trinitarians just give lip service to the trinity while knowing (either consciously or subconsciously) that Jesus is a man who was tempted like we are. I attended a Presbyterian church in 1999 and one Sunday the sermon was about trusting and obeying. The first verse the minister (definitely a trinitarian) went to was Luke 22:42 where Jesus says "not my will but thine be done". He said "even Jesus had to struggle with trust and obey at times". All right! If that minister knows that Jesus could be tempted with weakness like that, then somewhere in his mind he knows Jesus isn't really God the Creator. Some TWI leaders seemed to declare war on trinitarians, but even VPW made a distinction at AC '79. He said those who were adamant about the trinity were possessed. He didn't say all trinitarians were possessed. Everybody who called themselves Christian believed Jesus is God; VPW had no choice but to glean from trinitarians.
  23. Growing up in MI as a Tiger fan, my mom took me to 1 game per year. In 1966 we saw a July double header against the Indians. In the second game the Indians won 13-2. Seven home runs by the Indians (Colivito - 2, Leon Wagner - 2, Chuck Hinton, Max Alvis, and Buddy Booker - 1 each). I can't remember who pitched for the Tigers. I remember that Baltimore won the AL pennant and the World series that year. I remember that 4 Tigers started the all star game: Freehan at catcher, McLain pitched, retired all 9 he faced, Mc Aulliffe was the SS and Kaline in RF. Kaline might have injured himself and missed the game, but he was named to start. Max Alvis was a great 3rd baseman. If it weren't for Brooks Robinson he probably would have been in several all star games. Does anybody know if he's still alive and if he's still in baseball?
  24. If I remember correctly Thome batted 8th on the '95 team. Of course, that team had Albert Belle, Matt Williams, and Manny Ramirez (all very serious sluggers) on it. Their team this year has a lot of young players on it doesn't it? Give 'em time.
  25. Most of the lightbearers I saw were actually pretty good at witnessing.
